thank you so much for all your sympathy about my camera. and iron and chex mix. my friend kerry gifted me with a bag of the peanut butter chex mix on sunday and let me tell you it is delicious! especially if you are into the whole salty and sweet thing. i am, maybe too much so. salt and pepper on your cantaloupe anyone? yeah thats me. anyway, i have been told in the past that i am a, ahem, opinionated person, but this time i am looking for your opinions. since i am in the market for a new camera now, i was wondering what you bloggers are using, like, dislike and soforth. of course i am totally coveting this, but i think for now it is out of my price range, maybe...maybe not. and i am in the market for a new iron as well. do i get one of those fancy pants rowenta irons or just something i can pick up at target? is my crafting suffering because of the quality of my iron? really? and while you are at it, tell me if you color your hair yourself, what kind of dye do you use? i am reaching another intolerably grey stage and am getting the itch to color my hair again. until i can afford to go to the hippest salon in kc, i have to do it myself. what do you like ladies?
and on a totally unrelated note, bad habits. i have some bad habits that i have managed to kick, one being the habit of unbuttoning and unzipping my pants as i walk to the bathroom. ok when you are at home sans company, not ok when you are at work. got that one kicked pretty quickly. the other bad habit i need to work on is this. i find myself checking my chest to see if it is time to pump. you know, like handling a melon or something... very bad, i caught myself doing this in the hallway at work today, luckily no one else was around, but definitely something i need to nip in the bud right away. nice one hannah.
yeah, the checking to pump thing - totally relate!
if you're going to do your hair yourself go to a beauty supply place. get developer and color there- feria is good. it's better than the stuff you can get at the store. a lot of times it's actually cheaper at the beauty supply, too.
We have a Canon PowerShot A85. It's not totally low-end, but we could only afford a mid-range camera. I picked it for its lens and supposedly quick click-to-shot time. But it seems like it takes the thing for-ev-er to get the shot after you click. With little kids this is no good. Maybe I'm doing something wrong -- I do the half-click and everything... Also, other models of the PowerShot have a flip viewer so you can face the camera and see what you're shooting. That would be nice.
My mom and mil both have the Kodak Easyshare, which I kind of turned my nose up at, but it seems to get the shot faster and the pics are pretty good. And it's cheap.
I had the same iron dilemma not too long ago. I just picked one up at Target for $20. I couldn't figure out what possible difference it would make with the crafting.
I was doing the feel-up thing, too, when I was breastfeeding!
hannah, that sucks about your camera, I look forward to your pictures everyday, bummer. I have no thoughts on the camera or hair dye but I do have lots of thoughts on an iron. I always give it the heavy test. Pick up each iron and pick the heaviest. I have found that Black & Decker at Sears is a good deal. Also, invest in a iron holder on your wall, once you drop an iron on the floor is all goes south from there.
i'm still using the iron someone gave me as a highschool graduation present--and I know you know my current age...so i'm probably not one to ask. i just got a new camera last week--I didn't do enough research b/c I was impatient, but I bought it from a local camera shop, hoping to get better advice there...I got an olympus...(it's in my car so i don't know the number). she rec'd it for its great lenses. but I also jumped about 4 pixels, so that made a big difference, too. I like it. I'm not thrilled yet, but i havne't been using it very long to really "know" it well. I'm anxious to see what others use. I wonder if some people at work are sad to see your bad habits go??!!
this post has me laughing so hard all my coworkers are staring at me. I too got into the habit of unzipping en route to the bathroom while working at home, and now I find myself doing it in the crowded hallways of work. lovely.
The object of your desire (the D50) is indeed worth it. I bought mine a few months ago and now I don't know how I lived without it. Makes it a joy to take pictures.
Don't really know much about irons though. I use a $10 one I got from target and it seems to work pretty well. Of course, if I got a rowenta I might decide I didn't really know how I lived without it. Probably best not to discover what I'm missing.
i color my own hair, which is 50% gray and i'm only THIRTY SEVEN. whatever. Sally Beauty Supply is your friend. Ask one of the nice ladies in there what you need - the one in Shawnee is good. You need developer + color. much cheaper than drugstore/Target. although if I'm in a hurry Loreal Preference (medium ash brown) is the winner for lasting color.
The best iron i've used is my MIL's from the 60's. One of those heavy, heavy metal things, works like a charm. I see them at estate sales for $5 all the time. Just make sure it's not so old that it has a completely cloth cord. scary, that.
we have a nikon coolpix3700. the one that was stolen was an Elph. loved that thing. the nikon is okay, next time I'd do more dpi.
I'm in the market for a new camera, too. I have a Kodak, but it's only 2.2 mp! I definitely need something with more oopmh! I use my grandmother's old iron. My dad rewired it for me. It works great. Happy shopping.
The fancy iron is so worth it. I quilt, sew, make baby carriers, etc., and the difference is a big one. I have a black and decker - like someone said, the heaviest one is what seems to matter. It was 60 or 70 bucks several years ago. Good luck.
oh i hate ironing so much, but it's amazing how much easier it is with a better iron. go for it hannah.
as for the camera... i have a total crush on the d50 and dear lord i see one in my (distant) future. why settle when it could be oh so so good. (okay, i know "why", but really, it is so good).
*so* sucks about your theft - at least you seem to have a good attitude about the whole event!
I get to use tons of different irons at my quilting class, and I have to say that this black & decker model (http://www.blackanddeckerappliances.com/product-105.html) beats the pants off the other, fancier and more expensive versions I've used. It's only around $30, and it's heavy duty and simple to use.
I need a new camera too, so will be reading these recommendations!
I have the Canon Power Shot 610. It's the one that has the flip viewer previously mentioned. The one main function I like is that I can highlight one color in a picture and make the rest black and white. Other than that I don't like this camera. We had a Sony before this Canon, and I liked the blast function better(supermodel mode of taking multiple pictures in a small amount of time) and I liked that the Sony took clear pictures of moving things without a flash. If I'm taking a picture of a baby moving with the Canon I have to have it on flash in order for it to not be fuzzy.
Regarding the iron; a good iron is indispensable especially when it comes to crafts and sewing.
i would love to post some pictures of the fun i had thursday night. i got to teach a freezer paper stencil workshop to the high school girls at my church. it was fun and they loved it, and i took pictures. but the funny thing is my camera got stolen out of my car. guess what else got stolen? my iron! yup. i had my iron in there for the stencils and i guess the thief thought it would get them a buck at the thrift store maybe. well sorry to tell you thief, the iron is pretty sucky. it leaks water like mad, and sometimes leaves brown rusty stains on things. sorry. im sure the camera will get you a nice chunk of change. and the jump drive that was in the camera bag as well. what i really cant figure out is why you thought it necessary to take my bag of chex mix. i was really looking forward to tasting the new sweet and salty peanut butter chocolate mix. i hope it was good. i guess i really shouldnt complain all that much, considering the fact that i get creeped out thinking about some stranger in my garage. and actually i should be thankful that you didnt just take the whole car or heaven forbid, come in the house. so all in all, i guess the camera, iron and chex mix is a fair trade. thanks.
holy cow! that is the creepiest thing i've heard in a while. somebody else going through your things...and delicious snacks. no fank you. i'm so sorry!! but hey, at least you have that chocolate bag to fall back on from monday! Mmmm...tasty thoughts.
hannah, i am so angry for you! yes, there are things to be thankful for, of course, but it's frickin WRONG, too. when my apartment was broken into, it was so frustrating, thinking of someone rifling through my personal things, not caring what they might mean, just looking for (possible) profit. riles me up. so you be thankful. and i'll be angry. :)
That's horrible! I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm always worried about losing my camera, especially after I've taken a bunch of fun pictures. And I agree that it's creepy to think about that guy in your garage, going through your things. Ugh. Glad to hear that you had fun teaching stenciling, even if you don't have the pictures to show for it.
ugh! sucks. i'm going to miss your lovely pictures! that chex mix sounds really yummy tho, I guess I don't blame them. and it sounds like your iron and mine were separated at birth!
(will your insurance cover the camera? renters/homeowners? maybe? just a thought.)
i am SO sorry. i hope the iron leaked rusty water all over his or her (probably stolen) outfit. and may they choke on the chexmix®. kidding!
kinda.
our really expensive digital camera was stolen off dh's desk at work. crazy. he was stupid to leave it there but still. that one is still painful to talk about.
Karma's gonna kick that person in the hiney one day. *Maybe* just *maybe* they'll have an allergic reaction to the chex mix! That would be poetic justice!
oh hannah! i am so sorry. we had our whole car stolen out of our car-port almost a year ago now. felt so violate. missed the stuff in the car more than the car itself. taught me to never leave too much in the car. and that stuff is - well stuff. and so greatful, like you that they didn't come into the house. i feel your pain. xo
if you were maybe thinking that i was off on some sort of lovely vacation, um i wasnt. yeah, i have been in the lab for the last week sorting lithics. fun stuff let me tell you. and to top it off, the only computer in the place is one of those really old ones that has a foot pedal to keep it running. just kidding, but not by much. just wanted to pop in and say that i miss all you lovely people in the blog world. luckily i havent had all of my crafting soul sucked out quite yet. last night was craft night again with my friends, and while i didnt craft anything per say (unless you count oatmeal cherry cookies) i did finish a monumental feat. behold... most of my fabric has been washed, ironed and folded!!! praise the lord. it really was something that needed to be done. and i feel so much better and almost, dare i say, organized? ok, lets not go that far. back to lithics. isnt archaeology so glamorous? oh yes da'ling....
ahhhh - it is glamorous! especially to those of us who don't really know all the hard (mundane?) work it involves (i was drawn to art conservation for the glamour / romance of the idea - oooh sadly mistaken. reality isn't so good sometimes!!)
can't wait to see where those piles of yummy fabric take you!
you're supposed to wash your fabric? what! oh, yeah...that never gets to happen in this house. have you seen the line of dirty clothes that sit in front of the fabric? they never get a turn....
i decided to work on my belly and watch the first two episodes of project runway last night instead of crafts. plus i can hardly stand to take pictures at night. i hate using my flash, but the alternative is dark blurry pictures. who wants to see my w.i.ps like that? i know i dont. i have a nice stack of baby gifts almost finished. i am sure they will be making appearances next week. instead how about some vanilla ice cream, raspberries and mini chocolate chips? yes please! have a wonderful weekend everyone. we got some rain last night so the 100 plus temps have finally broken. hello 80's!
Yum! My stomache is growlllllling. I chose to sleep last night instead of attacking my huge list of TO DOs. Sleep and ice cream are very necessary, even if not officially on the list.
Ok, this is the second ice-cream post I have seen today and we have NO ice cream in our house [sigh!]. You must have sent the hot weather to Portland...its supposed to be 102 today! Have a great weekend!
i think you all might have misunderstood me a few posts back. you know, when i said i go to the fabric store with three kids. i do, but believe me, i dont deserve your compliments. i think the problem springs from perception. i think you think (and correct me if i am wrong here) that i am strolling around the fabric store, looking at bolts of fabric without a care in the world, while my three children sit as comatose and angelic as cupie dolls in the shopping cart. no. not even close. while i would love it if that were true, it is more like the exact opposite. picture me in the basement, agonizing over some bag or whatever that i want to make, and after going through all of my fabric and scraps ten times (while making a huge mess) i finally decide that i just cant do it if i dont have some black and white dotted fabric. so then five days later, i muster up the courage, feed the kids, shove them in the minivan, drive like a banshee to joanns (because i could never really take three kids to a NICE fabric store) stuff them in a cart, rush over to the black/white section, grab a bolt, dash to the cutting counter. stand there like a crack addict waiting for a fix (picture some slight body tremors here) get my half yard (because i shouldnt be spending money on fabric anyway) push my cart quickly past the thread aisle, snatch one before those two sets of amazingly sticky fingers get any into the cart, pay the lady at the register, drive like a banshee back home because now arlo is screaming. get home, turn on the transformers dvd for the ten millionth time, give collette some more milk in a sippy cup because she drinks about a gallon and a half a day and spills the remaing half on the couch, then fall in an exhausted heap on the couch with a child attached to my chest. that is really more like it. i hope that clears things up. i promise i am no superwoman. i mean come on, we have been having bfd for two, maybe three (ok four) nights out of the week. breakfast for dinner that is. guaranteed to be eaten, and involves protein. my two main goals when it comes to dinner lately. but sometimes its just pancakes. or noodles with butter. i just cant bring myself to make a regular dinner that only i am going to eat. it isnt so bad when david is there to eat some too, and eliot picks and collette just chews on a piece of pork chop for twenty minutes and thens spits out grey mounds of meat goop onto her plate. because the one thing i refuse to do is make separate meals. so we eat breakfast, because who doesnt love breakfast? crazy people thats who. somehow in my mind, making mostly decent food i know they will eat seems better than making a good dinner for myself and letting them have chips for dinner or something like that. i am thinking that in about four years from now i can make really yummy dinners and everyone will be able to eat them with a very minimal amount of complaining. until then, i read orangette for my foodie fix. yum.
We do bfd at least once a week! We also have the cereal option. I love to cook "actual" food. The kids are required to try everything and then they can opt for the cereal option. No separate meals made, but a little bit of a comprimise.
Well done at the fabric store...you are a true mother of three now!
last night: blueberry waffles and brown'n serve sausages.
My kids would have bfd every night if they could. Usually we do buttered pasta. Hy-Vee had Barilla for .55/box and i went nuts stocking my pantry for those easy dinners. Add sliced fruit and milk and you're done, right?
my problem is that my older ones will not fit in the cart so they're wandering around and SEE all these THINGS we need to DO and MAKE like SO and SO's MOM DOES. i don't need that kind of guilt.
First of all, I'm so glad you just gave "breakfast for dinner" three cute little letters--now I don't have to waste my time anymore saying the whole thing. really. I like it. How about BFD in your BVD's? Second--your JoAnn's description rings so absolutely true I was laughing out loud (could have used LOL there, but hate that abbrev. for some reason), and then had me almost crying realizing how pathetic I must look to everyone else in the store. Thirdly--I took two kids to the thrift store this morning..lost one, until I tracked down the worker-lady carrying the screaming baby with a leaky diaper (she grumpily pointed out to me), meanwhile, I lost the other while reclaiming the first...then the same lady got on the loud speaker and made an announcement about "for hte safety of your children, please leave them in your cart...yadda, yadda...."
I can barely handle the one kiddo at the fabric store, let alone three. So, bravo for making it there at all! We had a screaming/full cart/full diaper/no changing table in the restroom episode at the Hancock Fabrics last week. They are a pretty good alternative to the "nice" fabric store, too (where they seemed annoyed when Elise was throwing her socks on the floor -- gasp!).
Breakfast for dinner - Gooooooood! I make a menu for the week on Friday night with the fam (while we're out for dinner and waiting for our food to arrive - that way they can't complain about what we're having 'cuz they helped make the menu), but if Tim's not home and especially if I am tired, the menu goes out the window and we're havin' scrambled eggs. Or just cereal is good too. :) Yea frosted mini-wheats!
this made me laugh really hard. I could eat breakfast for every meal every day. I'm not usually allowed to pick where we go after church because I always pick breakfast every time.
Ahh, what a crafting mother will do! I'm right there with you, sister. Tonight, I made a desperate decision to take the 2 & 3 year olds to the quilt/craft/sew fair at 7pm! Yikes! Am I crazy? YES! But I made sure they each had a lollipop to eat as we dashed up and down the 5 aisles. I hope to be back by myself tomorrow!
Oooh, your potatoes look YUMMY! Thanks for mentioning Orangette too, amazing!
bfd sounds eminently sensible! Audrey's latest dinnertime trick is to take 2 bites of whatever is in front of her, announce "I've had enough", and then dart off to pull all the cushions off the couch to 'build a house' or some such. Anything that makes meal times with kids less stressful is a winner in my eyes!
I loved this post. Truer words have never been blogged. I only have 1 kid, but I can relate, in a less frenetic way, to it all.
I would eat b for l or d easily. My housemate don't agree. Bea would rather eat d for b. I asked her the other day what she wanted for breakfast and she said pasta.
Sometimes my meal plan involves LFL&D (that's lunch for lunch and dinner). . .you see, you feed the kids a really, really big meal for lunch. Then when dinner rolls around, suggest "You guys aren't really that hungry, are you?" Bonus! One meal for two!
Hahahaha! How is it that all mother's live the same life somehow?
My favorite part was the standing at the cutting counter like a crack addict needing a fix. I do that EXACT THING when I'm wanting people to hurry up so my kids don't start becoming...well, kid-like.
ok. i have been watching too much little einsteins lately. nevertheless i have managed to get two things crossed off my list. the list in my head if you were wondering. i havent blogged the list because i am afraid to look at in its entirety. anywho, i got these thank you notes done yesterday for all the wonderful friends that surprised me on my birthday with the most lovely of mixers. i thought the kitchen theme very appropriate. i am telling you ladies, throw away those glue sticks! the specs: pool 4bar scallop card with a red 4bar envelope from papersource. image printed on regular paper and stitched on by yours truly. looking at this i realize that i am slightly obsessed with the pool/red combo. it just looks so stinkin' good together. what i really should do is translate it to a skirt one of these days. put it on the list!
this little lady was also finished a few days ago. please meet elinor. elinor is a belated birthday gift for my friend margot. her mom kristen is coming over to craft tonight so elinor will be going to her new home soon, and i figured that margot probably wont be checking this blog so the surprise isnt fully out of the bag yet. oh and kristen, margot is certainly welcome to give her a new name. i was debating on molly, david voted for sally or flower crotch. in the end elinor won out. anyway, i put some more pictures up on flickr because this is my first successful softie attempt! i am thinking that my previous problems are all do to a lack of pattern. figures. and of course i must thank the genius behind all of this. i mean for goodness sakes, she came up with these! thank you hillary! you really are a genius...
Hannah, Margot LOVES Elinor (I don't think I caught her name last night at your house, so I'm glad I picked that up here...I'll be sure to tell Margot when she wakes up). I handed her to Margot this morning when she woke up and said she was a birthday gift from Hannah. She immediately gave Elinor a kiss and started carrying her around chanting, "Hannah, Hannah, Hannah." Elinor may get a new name by default. Thanks so making Margot such a sweet present!
i love having tickle fights with the kids. i really do, it is fun, but i think every parent experiences that quick, sharp moment of panic when they have you pinned down and you think this is it, they are going to do me in. it is a good thing toddlers dont roam wild in packs. it could be very dangerous.
fantastic picture--I think my husband may have a few more of those "quick, sharp moments" than I do, if you know what i mean! our family dog is good for a few wrestling matches, too...as in dog/toddler wrestling! or more accurately toddler wrestling, tugging at and rolling all over giant docile yellow lab! PS. playlist from my last post coming soon..
Love this shot Hannah. It reminds me that I don't wrestle enough with Margot...although that might be because my huge belly would probably get in the way right now.
i love summer, everyone knows it. but sometimes i forget what the midwest likes to deliver. 99 degrees with a heat index of 112. yum. and you know, it really isnt that bad laying in a pool, but unfortunately going to the pool with three kids by myself is not something i can do. i can do a lot of things with three kids, go to costco, get groceries, even brave the fabric store, but the pool i can not do. mainly because it could result in death. so here we are stuck inside. bleh. we did manage to get to the spray park on saturday with kristen and margot, that was really fun, but not quite the same as lazing in a pool. oh well. next weekend, i promised eliot we would definitely go to the big pool next weekend when dad is home. it really was a good weekend. friday involved friends, dinner, loooots of carbs (yum!) and rummikub. i love board games, sorry is a big hit around here, and rummikub. those are the two standards. i think the reason i like them so much is that they dont involve a ton of brain power, so you can conversation and be silly while playing. excellent.
and this girl. she hit the five month mark on saturday! five months??? wow. seriously? five months has gone by already? man. what is miss arlo jane up to you might ask (even though you are not, i am going to tell you anyway because this is as close to a baby book as she is going to get) rolling over, check, holding that massive head up, check, experimenting with rice cereal, check, falling off the bed, check (reference the first achievement), found her voice, check, being generally disgustingly cute in all things, check. she really wants to get places but it is pretty tough when you are hauling around a load like this. ha! although those leg rolls are pretty darn munchable. they also fall into the running category of things that are adorable on babies but not so much for adults. you know, things like onesies, eating your hand, drool and head wobbling. not good for adults, but you get a baby doing those things and people just go crazy.
i am sorry to say that i dont have a picture of my completed doll to share. i did stay up late crafting on saturday, but i also watched harry potter and the goblet of fire. i often caught myself holding the needle and floss in midair for long stretches of time. tomorrow, i promise.
yeah, the pool is tough. I've been going with my almost 2 and the older ones, but I am in a state of Constant Fear and don't enjoy myself/relax the entire time. Although I will say the pool we go to in OP (Marty) has a great sandbox/petri-dish area for the little ones and mine are still content to putter, splash a little in the zero depth area, putter in the sand some more, etc.
I will NOT go to the fabric store with mine. very impressed that you make it there. no way, no how.
Ahh! Love the thigh rolls. And I'm happy to hear you still manage to go the fabric store with three children. I keep wondering how I will manage to get around if we ever have another child. You give me great hope my dear!
My boys love the fabric store. Maybe it's the legos, or maybe it has tons of places to hide from mommy. Or maybe it's the nice older ladies doting on them all the time.
those leg rolls? Um, way cute. So cute. And I'm so glad to read that I'm not the only mum with a blog as the closest thing my kids will get to a baby book. Oh, you want to know what you weighed at 6 months. Hmn, well, I can tell you what I made you to WEAR at six months! ha! Do you think that will be enough?
as a mom of three that are a wee bit older, i can tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel! mine are 9, 7, and 3. we go swimming at the big pool all of the time. started last year alone. Once elliot can be trusted in the water your life will get a ton easier...in reference to swimming that is!
oh my--the pool with three--stress overload. and that is a lovely display of baby rolls, my all time favorite type of roll, really...should we talk about the stuff that gets trapped inside those cute baby rolls?!! happy five months. time surely does fly, doesn't it?
Margot and I so enjoyed the spray park. And anytime you want to brave the pool, I'd be happy to help you keep an eye on those adorable Huffsters! I'm not sure how you do the fabric store with 3 of them though...I have a hard enough time keeping Margot from spilling beads all over the floor when I'm at Urban A+C. That's why I reveled in the time I had at Sarah's last week BY MYSELF!
Arlo is just so beautiful! I'm impressed that you do the fabric shop with 3 kids, too - I find it a little stressful sometimes with just one in tow! You're a star!
Wow, how on earth do you manage the fabric store with three? I wouldn't even dare to take two. In fact, I don't even like taking one. But the pool, on a nearly 100-degree day? I'd find a friend and go anyhow. Two grown-ups could manage four or five littles. Er... maybe...
i know that i said i was trying to avoid WIP friday, but here i am. i did manage to get the apron done for vikkie so that is good. this little lady is going to another little lady i know once i get the details done. i have to admit that this is take two on this. i made the most boneheaded mistake ever in sewing. i cut out both pieces of the body facing the same way! so when i went to line them up right sides facing, of course they didnt match. stupid, stupid, stupid. of course i didnt catch this mistake until i had already sewn on the head and limbs, so i just scratched that one completely and started over last night. david is out of town again this week until sunday so i imagine i will have one really late night of sewing on saturday. which is good because i have other projects waiting that i didnt have the heart to take pictures of by the time i gave up last night at midnight.
on a somewhat related note, i have hit a wall with pumping. how is that related? well, because my nursing cycle really starts to compete with my crafting cycle. since this is my third go round with nursing and pumping i am trying not to stress out too much. basically arlo has caught up with me supply-wise. which means i have to get off my lazy bum and start pumping more either at work or worse yet, set and alarm and get up in the middle of the night to pump. bleck. although this could end up working out in favor of crafting. last night instead of going to bed at a decent hour and setting an alarm, i just stayed up working on a project and then pumped at midnight and then went to bed. either way it sucks, but what else is there to do? at least i get some crafting done as well, right? i also started slamming fenugreek capsules again. this really helped me out with both eliot and collette, by keeping my production going for the last six months. if you have no idea what i am talking about and might be a nursing mother someday, read this article. the only drawback? it makes your body smell like maple syrup. seriously, like my skin just oozes maple syrup smell, which i guess if you like maple syrup is ok. i like maple syrup only on pancakes, not in candy or anything scented, so this makes me kind of gag at myself for a few months. kids. the lengths we go to for them. there you have it. i doubt very many of you were planning on reading a post about my milk production, but hey, my banner does say "a day in the life" and this is what my life is revolving around right now. have a wonderful weekend all. it is going to be a scorcher here in kc. time to head to the spray park!
Ilove the little bits of crafting that I'm seeing the picture. what fun prints, too! and hello?! you are a pumping superhero--that you'd even ponder waking up in the middle of the night to pump? wow. go girl. i've heard beer is good for the ol' supply. my husband always likes to tell that to the ladies when he cracks open a beer. (that sounded like he's some crass old man, he's really the exact opposite, he just enjoys that little factoid.)
Good on you. I livein Canada and we have a year for maternity leave so I never had to do much pumping, but in the very beginning I did do the hebal thing and yup, maple syrup. I also drank one flat Guiness a day. It worked, because the baby is now one and a half and I'm having a heck of a time weaning.
Anyway, you're a seasoned pro at this by now, but good luck anyway.
I am going through the exact same thing. My baby Otis never latched and I have pumped for almost four months now and over the last week I have noticed a decline in my milk production and he is beginning to want more. We have used up all the frozen milk and I have had to add a formula feed pver the last two days. I would like to be back to just breast milk. When I first started I took fenugreek for three days and have just started again. I was wondering do you take the herb everyday or on three day periods as I was told to do? Also do you have any other tips for me.
I don't mind reading about your pumping, good for you! I just watched a lame thing on breastfeeding on 20/20. Why is this making news? I mean really. Doesn't everyone know its better? Whatever.
Have you tried mothers milk tea? Maybe anise makes you gag too. Also Penta water, though expensive, did work for me. It absorbs better into your boy than plain water.
What's wrong with having a "work in progress" on Friday. I think I'm missing something...is this some new term in the craftblog world that I've missed?
hannah, you are a great mom!! way to put arlo's needs in front of your own. i'm finding that the first year goes too quickly and smelling like maple syrup has to be worth it.
that isnt really a title that you should use lightly. but my friends and i agree that vikkie fits the bill. let's see, she is super cute, so energetic it takes your breath away, awesome with kids, loves her husband and dog almost to a fault and is a kick ass cook. i think that pretty much cinches it. and what does the perfect wife need? why a cute little apron to bustle around the kitchen in of course! happy birthday vikkie, you are the best! as a side note, brett is fast approaching the perfect husband title as well. let me just tell you this friends, last night he, thats right i said he, made the BEST pound cake from scratch that i have ever tasted. perfectly moist on the inside, wonderful crust on the outside with a hint of crunch. oh baby. what else did brett do? oh just made his own whipped cream from scratch. thats right. and had sliced strawberries, and served everyone who was there to celebrate with vikkie. these two are so good it kind of makes you sick. way to go wieses! we love you guys!
hannah, wow, I am in tears right now. Man, you know how to make a girl feel special, that was way to much!!! Thanks for being such a good friend, I love my new apron, I love it!!! Just so you all know, I am far from the perfect wife. I don't brush my teeth twice a day like you should, and I am way to needy, and sometimes my dog Debo gets more kisses than Brett, gross!!
when vikki brought us dinner one night when the entire family was ill - she printed out custom stickers from her computer for each tupperware container and each were wrapped in brown silk ribbon. man! martha can kiss my ass.
i had forgotten how much i was in love with him when i was five. i really did love him, i think the first of my young heart. you have made me remember this love and have given me a new one. i dreamt of you last night, the old dream i always have, where i fall from a building and you fly to rescue me. those are pretty tough shoes to fill, and you were wonderful. love, hannah
i did get my sewing done, but then realized that they are all presents, and i cant show you pictures until the recipients have been surprised. phoo. go see superman. two thumbs up and a big sigh from my inner five year old.
What you really need Hannah, is a poster of Dean Cain wearing a wifebeater and a Superman tattoo...that will really change your life. I have no idea where you could get one though. Estate sale?
what girl doesnt need a new pair of red shoes? i had a great weekend. the sale at habitat was spectacular, a multitude of people at the store. i picked up this sweet little pair for myself. dont worry ladies, there are more for the taking, they even have them in black and the most lovely coral pair in a similar style. what are you waiting for??
jeremys show was wonderful. it was great to see him talking to people and make a few sales i do believe! posted some pictures on flickr for your viewing enjoyment. saturday the huffsters and i lazed around until the evening when we headed to the airport to pick up david. eliot was flitting from place to place like a robin after a summer shower when all the worms are wiggling on the pavement. there were just plumb too many things to be excited about. planes, luggage carousels, mosaics on the floor and dad! oh my! talk about your cheap entertainment, i think we might start going to the airport every few months for the heck of it! im not kidding.
so, many crafty things on my plate. hopefully i will get some quality time in with the ol' singer tonight so i can show you what i have been up to. here is to hoping i dont have a picture to post on WIP friday...
I'm hoping to make it out to the First Friday in September, hopefully by then I'll be back up on my feet (even if it is in this ugly black contraption).
now that's a good pair of shoes! can't wait to see what your singer is up to.... I think monthly trips to the airport is a great idea. my sister takes her kids to the little local airport pretty often to see the planes taking off and landing. they love it.
I'm SO GLAD we stumbled across that size 5 for you...I still can't believe it b/c I really thought we received nothing smaller than a 6. They're perfect for you. You know I think every woman needs at least one pair of red shoes! Thanks for all your help on Friday night. You were amazing. When you're ready to quit your day job, we're ready to hire you!
why you might ask? because my hardworking friends john and kristen, owners of handsdown the coolest store in kc just added ecommerce to habitat! go check out their new site! and since you will be too busy swooning at all the shoes, clothes and bags, i should point out that there is free domestic shipping! shop away friends, shop away. and if you live in kansas city, then get your butts down to the crossroads district for first fridays. habitat is having a "big ol' shut yo mouth" sidewalk sale, as my friend jeff puts it. come in and say hi. i will probably be the lady behind the register. i also want to give a shout out to my good friend jeremy. i have known him since the first day of 7th grade. since then he has been moving forward with his passion for art, his faith and the outdoors. he is having a gallery opening downtown tonight as well.
i am so proud of him! he and his wife are getting ready to welcome their first child in a few weeks too. i am so interested to see how this new part of his life will translate in his art. so many good things going on right now, our dear friends the eddys just moved back to town this week. all this goodness makes me feel so happy and jittery at the same time! have a wonderful weekend all. if you can come say hi and come support local business and the arts downtown tonight. at the very least, i hope you friends old, new, local and blogispheric are feeling the goodness too!
Hey, I know Jeremy! (used to work with him) I didn't know he was having a show. I'll have to see if the baby has enough patience for another First Friday (the last one was a little iffy with her).
darnit, I don't have a sitter. shucks, and I have lusted after so many shoes there. a lady of my age probably shouldn't be wearing those platforms, anyway, i guess :)
hope it's fun - what terrific weather! I think my dh knows jeremy, which is just 6 degrees of strangeness. KC is such a small little world. But a nice one, nonetheless.
thank you all so much for your birthday wishes. i sent replies to every comment that i could find an email for, and for those that i could not, thank you again! what a day, what a week, whew! it is hard to believe that just a week ago some of my favorite people got together to bake 120 cupcakes! that is cutie kristen peeking through in that picture, and you can hardly tell she is 31 weeks pregnant! happy birthday kristen, thank you so much for sharing your day with me! i posted some more pictures from the party on flickr, but be forewarned, there are pig pictures there. i will fully admit that looking at a roast pig is entirely different from eating roasted pork. one is disgusting and the other heavenly. and even though the invitations specifically said no gifts, our amazing friends surprised kristen and me with something we had both been wanting for ever and ever. for me it was this lovely lovely item in pistachio. oh man. it makes me feel guilty how much i love this mixer and how much i wanted it. seriously. and kristen received a set of dishes that she had been coveting from anthropologie for ages. very sneaky guys, and very much appreciated! dear david also surprised me with dinner, a movie and secretly had the girls at papersource make a bouquet of paper flowers for me. what a guy!
as for being thirty, seems pretty good so far. i mean, my joints hurt and i have grey hair, but i had that at 29 so whats the big deal? and for the record, yes that is all of my hair in that picture, and yes i was joking around with the camera, i did not leave the house with that bow stuck on my head like that. although i did leave the house in that huuuuge tampa bay sweatshirt and stirrup pants all the time. so there. hope everyone had a wonderful holiday yesterday. im getting ready to tackle some big blog things, watch out...
oh and ps. not to make you crazy jealous, but this showed up at my doorstep on saturday, just so you know. thank you again a million times amy.
Whoa...those pig photos almost converted me over to vegetarianism [I'm sure I just made up that word!]. But of course, I did enjoy some tasty bacon this morning... Sounds like you had a lovely birthday...ooh and I love the mixer!
i think loving a mixer that much is surely a sign of old age...but i love mine, too...so that's puts me in the same boat! love pistachio. so fun and vintage looking. i'm going now to look at these pig pix...i think i can handle it! can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for this here blog....
so many cupcakes! i never knew making that many cupcakes could be so fun. :) it was so great to celebrate with you this weekend! i can't wait to taste some of the delicious treats that will come from that mixer. :)
Not a group of women I'd rather make 10 dozen cupcakes with. I haven't gotten around to posting a photo of my dishes yet, but I'll second that we do have amazing (and sneaky) friends. And I am SO JEALOUS of that purse you received from Amy. I was seriously salivating over it on her blog -- such cute fabric and such a sweet size! Congrats!

Are you saying it's not socially acceptable to feel one's self up in public?
Oh. Damn.
yeah, the checking to pump thing - totally relate!
if you're going to do your hair yourself go to a beauty supply place. get developer and color there- feria is good. it's better than the stuff you can get at the store. a lot of times it's actually cheaper at the beauty supply, too.
I do the salt on canteloupe -- mmm.
Must go -- daughter is attempting to eat glue.
hannah,
that sucks about your camera, I look forward to your pictures everyday, bummer.
Probably best not to discover what I'm missing.
cheers,
julie
good place to do side by side comparisons:

i color my own hair, which is 50% gray and i'm only THIRTY SEVEN.
Just make sure it's not so old that it has a completely cloth cord. scary, that.
we have a nikon coolpix3700. the one that was stolen was an Elph. loved that thing. the nikon is okay, next time I'd do more dpi.
wow, aren't i just full of advice today??
I'm in the market for a new camera, too. I have a Kodak, but it's only 2.2 mp! I definitely need something with more oopmh! I use my grandmother's old iron. My dad rewired it for me. It works great. Happy shopping.
Hey, I do the boob squeeze all day as well. I guess it isn't the best thing to do in public.
I have a Rowenta iron, and it isn't all that great. Next time I'm going cheap.
I totally do the zipper thing.
and I can't eat cantelope without salt and pepper (sometimes honeydew too). mmmm.
I did the boob thing too. I didn't even realize it, but once I was done nursing, it stopped on it's own.
And I was at Costco last night, licking the D50 with the fancy lens, and I thought of you... I say go for it!
