i have actually been downstairs doing things in my craft room. what i have not been doing is taking pictures, which drives me crazy. i made a lovely coin pouch for my papersource manager. she just moved to seattle to start up a new super store there. the idea was to make a care package for her 29 hour drive, and if there is one thing i cant stand, its not having change for tolls. drives me crazy. i learned the hard way after living in chicago for six months. you must have change in your car at all times! in theory a friend is sending me a picture of the pouch that she snapped. we shall see. what else? i have been thinking christmas!! it seems to early, but i really would like to give all hand made gifts this year. this may sound cost effective, but that is not always the case. right now i am really liking the idea of making flannel pj bottoms for everyone. i have it from sewing authority amy k that this is in fact not a crazy idea, and she says, and i quote, "it's easy!". im sure its easy for someone who makes beautiful dresses for her daughter and cool pants. i will let you know if it ends up being the case for me. i have a little sewing project to work on tonight, i cant say much about it because it is a birthday present for a friend of mine, and i know she lurks around here. i will take pictures this time, i swear!
since i have no craft pictures to share, i can always indulge in some huffster pictures. david has been making excellent use of the digital camera lately. as evidenced below.
eliot called me at the office the other day and said he missed me. so as a solution i told him to have dad take some funny pictures and email them. i got robot head and lonely robot as a result.
collette cant seem to get enough of walking around outside while wearing shoes. and speaking of lovely dresses, this one came straight from kingpod and the amazing amy. that dress is so cute it hurts. it really does. another item that is so cute it hurts? im going to have to go with these birdie robeezs. kelly posted these a few months ago. i never had any for eliot or collette, but i am thinking the third time around, these are a must. right? actually, i think the robeez would make excellent slippers for eliot and collette this winter. our house gets pretty chilly, and it is hard to get eliot to keep his slippers on. maybe with a pair of robot robeez it wouldnt take so much coercing. amanda asked me how i was doing, and i have to say im feeling pretty good for 19 weeks. its hard to believe that i am practically halfway done! maybe i will get a few belly shots in for all you naysayers that think i dont have a belly yet. its there believe me, i know and the rubber band keeping my pants buttoned know. not to mention the zipper that is hanging on for dear life! its time to drag that bag of maternity yuckness up from the basement again. you know, i dont mind regular maternity clothes, its the "work" clothes that just make me furious. and i know that i blame the clothes for the fact that i have to sit here at work instead of being at home in my comfy yoga pants or maternity jeans or whatever. so i apologize maternity work khakies for treating you with such vehemence. but i still hate you...
I was thinking about making pajama pants also. There are so many cute flannel and fleece designs. I would like to hear how it goes for you. I am not a very good seamstress.
i debated putting this photo up, but it fits with this months theme of body parts. there is a blog devoted to self portrait tuesday with some amazing photos. i have yet post an actual self portrait, credit for this one goes to chrysler, i think from last new years. so much is said about the eyes. window to the soul, bedroom eyes, and such. i think i have to agree. i always notice eyes, and always make a point to make eye contact while speaking. i also alway notice when someone does not like to make eye contact, shifty to say the least. coming from a brown-haired, brown-eyed family, a pair of sparkling blue eyes used to always make me simultaneously love and hate someone. when i was ten i thought connie sellecca was the most beautiful woman in the world, oh and wonder woman. i thought to myself, i have the dark hair, if only i could pull off the rest. in college i went on a blind date based soley on the fact that the guy said he had blue eyes. they were blue, but the rest wasnt so great. as an adult, i have come to terms with my eyes. my daughter of course was born with brown eyes, but when i look at her beautiful face, and see her lovely doe eyes shining at me, i think to myself, who needs blue?
it is official! david and i met the newest little huffster today. even though i was a complete wreck after being stuck in standstill traffic for 30 minutes, the awesome staff managed to still get me in for the sonogram. thank goodness! if you want to know what we are having, you are just going to have to click here. come on, humor me. let me drag the suspense out a few more moments!
wow! congrats!! okay-now you don't have to feel gulity buying collette expensive clothes, cause the new babe can wear them (this works for me! ask pete.)
big big hugs!it's always good to have the boys outnumbered.
please let the sweet baby girl crafting begin! i can't understand what the world will do with another huffman girl. i can hardly take collette. now that we know she is a girl, i would like to meet her! congratulations!
lately i have been feeling so upside down in my life. in limbo about so many things. the baby, my job, davids job, insurance. i could go on and on for days about insurance and how stressful it is, and how much money it can be and how i really dont want to be on cobra when this baby comes. but then i stop, take a few deep breaths, and remember. i remember a time when being upside down, literally was a great thing. it meant you were playing, and better yet, it meant you had found something to hang on, climb on, pretend to be a monkey on. it also meant that you spent every possible moment outside of your slim, slim responsibilities playing. whether that meant outside on a beat up old hammock, or inside under your fort made out of bed sheets, you were playing. and loving it. and thinking, man, if there was just a way that i could find something to hang upside down on, maybe even pull off a cherry drop this time, that would just be awesome. which makes me think, i can take this metaphorical upside down time in my life and pull off the most spectacular cherry drop yet, throw up my arms in exultation and beam my biggest smile to the world.
there are so many unknowns for you. i have no doubt that you'll come through as good as gold. life will be different in a good way so soon. i wish we could discuss all these things during porch time. we miss huffmania.
well put, donna. yes, hannah, i loved the photo, i loved your words. you articulated a jumble of emotion and life in such a beautiful way. brilliant. one of those, the world is a better and clearer place b/c you wrote that things. :)
if i were to guess, i would say that david probably doesnt like it when i say mish mash. especially in response to the question, what's for dinner? by mish mash, i mean whatever combination you can come up with from the various left overs in the fridge. so, here is my bit of mish mash for blogging. i did manage to get down in the basement last weekend and do some cleaning. im not done, so i wont reveal the dramatic results just yet. and really, they are not very dramatic. it just sounds fun. while i was down there digging through my piles of fabric, i did take pictures of my vintage pieces. i have been feeling sorry for myself ever since hillary started the vintage fabric group on flickr. i would ooh and aah over everything and wish i had some. i found out this weekend that i have more than i thought, and the best part? all but one of them have been gifts from my wonderful friends! that makes them even more special to me. so check out the group, it was fun to add my share! i also took pictures of my one and only vintage apron for the vintage apron group, which was exciting to contribute to. i hope to gather more aprons into my collection. i really love that the pocket is a cup and saucer. i added a detail picture in flickr. i took advantage of the wonderful daylight yesterday to snap a picture of eliots super simple pre-school blanket. it was so easy and satisfying to make. two yards of flannel and some zig-zag stitching. and he loves it! he is pretty much exactly a yard long, for now anyway. much better than a towel i say. let see, what else in in this mish mash.... oh one thing to note, we finally convinced collette of the virtue of shoes, just in time for fall weather. i swear this child has been barefoot for most of her 16 months. the first time we put shoes on her (a month ago) she cried and cried like we had insulted her most basic sensibilities. after some coaxing, the purchase of some socks that are not two inches thick, and a few walks up and down the sidewalk, i think she is into it. now i can begin many years training of shoe fetish indoctrination... anyway, here is a picture. its funny how shoes suddenly make her look so much older. like a big girl! i have to note that she is sitting on a hideous hospital couch in this picture. we visted a friend from work yesterday who had a baby girl. i also need to say a very sincere thank you to one of the sweetest women i know, mrs. fulton, my friend kerrys mom. she sends eliot and collette little gifts in the mail, and picks up cutie things on clearance at gymborie. mrs. fulton picked out this little outfit for collette. i wish her thumb wasnt in her mouth so you could see the cool fabric flower on her shirt, and the sweet little sheep on her skirt. thank you so much mrs. fulton! that about sums up the mish mash for today. next week is going to be totally crazy. we have the sonogram on wednesday and the sufjan stevens concert that night! im excited about both of those! such a handsome man... uh, yeah. so then david is having his wisdom teeth extracted on friday, and i will be spoon feeding him pudding the rest of the weekend. all that mixed in with pre-school and finding sitters, mish mash indeed!
leona rocks. the blanket turned out great. its amazing what a little flannel & a zig zag stitch can do for you. i love sufjan. and my mom. mish mash means finally some computer time for you. so glad.
That little Collette would look darling in anything but she is especially cute in that little green outfit. Actually Kerry was the one who selected this one. I do love buying baby clothes!!!!!! I am still so grateful to you and David for videoing Clark and Kerry's wedding. Just think - you were pregnant with Eliot at the time.
Ha! Can you believe that I had FORGOTTEN what it was like when little ones start wearing shoes? Alison and Henry were the same way . . .barefoot for the longest time (about 18 months), and them BAM! Shoes and socks! They hated them!
Your mish mash post really triggered some memories in my mish mashed brain! Thanks!
Oh and big hugs to David! I hope he recovers quickly!
oh, david. I'm sorry man. Whatever you do, don't suck through a straw...ouch. Not unless you like the taste of blood. I'm also glad Collette is learning the importance of shoes...just wait girl!!!!
i am going to give this a go, but starting out with an old childhood picture. i really enjoy reading stephanie's posts on tuesday, and she always has such lovely pictures, that i am inspired to give it a try. this is a picture of me from the winter of 77, i was about 18 months old. im wearing a pink knit dress that my great grandmother in bogota made for me, and apparently im loving it. the best part about this picture, is the fast forward 28 years to the picture below. my mom found this and a few other knitted treasures from my childhood and took some pictures of collette. i just sit and stare at these two pictures and can hardly believe the similarity. it is hard to tell from my washed out seventies picture that this is the same dress, but i promise it is.
hannah, i had no idea that you were so interested in canadian immigration. :)
i was so confused when i first opened this post because i thought for sure that that was collette in the first picture...but it looked so old. i can't believe how much she looks like you! what an amazing thing for your mom to have saved that dress for both her daughter and grand-daughter. i love it!
i debated for a moment leaving the canadian immigration comment spam from johnny canuck so that the rest of the comments would makes sense. on the other hand, good name for a boy david? johnnycanuck, johnnycanuck, johnnycanuk...
i love these pictures! i guess we know where the cute huffster cheeks come from. collette looks like such a little model in this picture. what a great kid.
what a fun comparison! that dress is awesome. it makes me want to save all of margot's clothes for her (potential) daughter b/c i don't have any of my stuff for her. there's no denying your claim on that girl.
it is a wonder i can make it out the door every morning. i cant seem to remember anything these days. on the days i want to bring my camera to work to download stuff, i probably actually bring it 30% of the time. so when i do manage to bring it to work, what do i do? leave it in my desk. grrrr. which means no picture of eliots blanket! i asked david to make sure it made its way back into his backpack so i could snap a shot this weekend. i wonder if he remembered... in the absence of pictures, i thought i would supply one of kerry's creation. she made the cutest teddy bear for a friends baby shower a few weeks ago, and when we showed up in columbia last weekend, there was one for collette! i think she likes it.
i keep lamenting about the state of my craft space in the basement (picture a ping pong table covered and mounded with stuff), and i am going to do something about it this weekend! promise number one to myself. we are also going to be dining out with friends on saturday in honor of davids birthday. someplace kid friendly but with good food, blue koi springs to mind. although i guess david gets to pick. speaking of birthdays, wanted to wish a big happy 29 to amanda!!! hope your day is totally wonderful!
collette is so kind. i hope you get a chance to organize this weekend. i love organization! can't wait to see the blanket, did you like how it turned out?
yesterday was my grandma's 84th birthday. happy birthday gigi! we had dinner at my parents house and it was fun to see her. she is really an amazing lady, i hope that i am as active as she is later in life. this lady was a nurse in the army during WWII, lived all over the country with her four children and airforce husband, raised four children on her own when my grandfather died suddenly when my dad was eight, opened and ran a bakery, and now in her retirement, travels like a mad lady and enjoys volunteering at a different place every day of the week! go grandma!! for her birthday i gave her a somewhat selfish gift, a small journal that i made a few weeks back. i say selfish because i want her to fill it with her thoughts and memories, as well as her adventures when she leaves for the winter to go to australia. she likes to spend every other winter in a small flat she rents in a little town called lakes entrance, somewhere near melbourne. i wouldnt mind spending january through april there myself. and when she gets back, hopefully with a journal full of thoughts, she is supposed to give it back to me so i can have it to remember her history! here are a few pics of the journal. i took this great class at paper source called coptic stitch binding. it is this amazing form of binding that uses no glue, just stitching! here is a little more detail on the spine and the inside pages. it was a great class, and even sweeter because i get paid to be there! im telling you ladies, working one night a week at that place has paid off ten fold! love it! i also rummaged through my stamps and inks and whipped up a little bday card. its been a while since i have made anything, so im a little excited. maybe too excited? oh well. i have another little project for tonight. eliot needs a little blanket or towel for nap time at preschool. im not going to send him with some ratty towel! so i bought some flannel at joanns over lunch today and am going to whip a little something together. he also has to take a family picture in, so we had my dad do a little work with the camera yesterday too. presenting huffmania all together in one place and time.... (in my head there is a drum roll)
man, there sure is a lot of cheek in those huffman kids. look at those round faces!! sheesh...
What a gorgeous family you have (with one more on the way!)! And I love the journal idea for your grandmother... there is so much to learn from that generation!
i love the huffman family photo. i can't imagine you sending eliot to school with any old blanket- i can't wait to see it! and i love the journal, did gigi love it? what a great idea!
That journal is really, really cool! I love papersource stuff. Oh, and I read one of your other posts below--I am also a BIG fan of snyder's and nutella..too much yum!
Love the cheeks, there's enough to go around. My kids are the string bean long legged type and they still have cheeks. But nothin' like the huffman's or my personal faves the Perkins.
a big thank you to clark and kerry for sponsoring huffmania (sans david) this weekend in columbia! we had a great time checking out some cool parks, and perfect weather. i think collette and eliot had the most fun climbing all over clark. just a guess though. we did have quite the time at a huuuuge park called cosmopolitan park, and i had the forethought to grab my camera. biggest attraction? gigantic tubeslides.
definitely fun for children and adults alike. we also had a picnic at a small lake west (?) of town and had the good fortune to run into an experienced grandpa that had an extra fishing pole. eliot was delighted and amazingly patient! note to self, take the kid fishing again soon.
he loved it! we kept mentally willing a fish to get caught on his hook, but they were not cooperating. and since i cant resist, one last picture of collette.
i uploaded some more park pics in my flickr account. some are a little out of focus, but i kinda like it that way. besides, i can just say they are arty...
ps. kerry posted some pics from the weekend on her blog too. how could i forget about homemade ice cream at sparkys?? clark, make sure you keep me updated on the guiness float.
ok, those photos at the park are too much -- you got some great ones over there at flickr. the mcclains and huffsters need to have some playtime very soon.
im sitting here at work, enjoying one of my most favorite snacks ever. a bag of snyders olde tyme pretzels and a jar of nutella. all you need is the will and a spoon to enjoy the deliciousness. in a pinch you can even ditch the spoon! not a whole lot going on in the crafting realm at my house. i did put together a scrapbook page about myself for a display at paper source, but i forgot to take a picture of it. nice. im blaming it on pregnancy brain, its creeping in. i had a doctors appointment yesterday, nice strong heart beat registering at 150. and was informed by my midwife that my uterus is growing. oh yeah? is that why none of my "business casual" pants fit anymore? ooooh. eah, im just grumpy, i love my midwife. she is really cool and already has delivered one of my babies. and she has blue, blue eyes. so pretty. as a brown-eyed girl, i always notice a blue pair of eyes. but i digress, all that to say that i have a sonogram appointment on the 21st of september! i am really looking forward to finding out what this babe is going to be. last night i had a dream that my sonogram showed a girl. but my body and cravings are just like when i was carrying eliot, which makes me think boy. i guess we shall see in three weeks!
speaking of boys, or men i guess i should say. my wonderful friend toby just got back to kenya from yet another strenuous safari project. building solar panels and gates for a medical center in lokori. he is adding pictures to his gallery every few days. here are a few that caught my eye.
arent they amazing? food for thought. have a wonderful holiday weekend!
i need to go to the gallery, those are great pictures. it still seems unreal that tobys life is in kenya. so amazing. also, can't wait to find out if its a boy or girl! can't believe its only 3 weeks away!
