huffmania managed to pull off a great evening of trick or treating. collette figured the whole system out right away and was straining at every porch light from the sidewalk. robin was swooping all over the place in her cape so it was really hard to get a good shot of her.eliots friend king richard came over to hit the streets with us. then we rounded out the evening with visits to the wieses and trisha shultzs house. we also snuck in a spur of the moment trip down to columbia to visit with our favorite eddys on saturday. it was fun to see them and do some costume sewing and pumpkin carving. you cant really beat two hours door to door. sadly no magic show for us. i think peter is done with entertaining for a bit. this spring maybe?
anyway, things i learned about sewing this weekend are: 1. my machine does not like pleather. sorry david... 2. i dont know how to make anything that needs to be curved. 3. i should just buy a pattern, instead of thinking, oh i can do it. 4. three year olds could care less what their costume looks like so it makes it all worth it. 5. start earlier. even if you think it is going to be easy. because it isnt. 6. who really cares, its dark on halloween night anyway!
anyway, enjoy the pics. and now i make the slow move to holiday ideas. any help kerry?
SHUT UP! those kids are too cute!!! i LOVE how the costumes turned out! how did you get the mask & sweatshirt to look so cool? i knew you would pull it off!! i need some holiday ideas too. we'll have to collaborate.
this is awesome hannah! are you just winging it, or do you have a sort of pattern? that R looks perfect! i can't wait to see all the pictures of batman & robin. so cute. i'd like to see this in person. "ta-ta" will be a great batman & collettey will be the perfect sidekick. i bet they start to team up even more once #3 is on the scene.
for those that know me this may come as a shock. i confess, in the winter months i use a very small amount of foundation mixed in with my face lotion. i pretty much wear zero makeup except for the few weddings and fancy dinners i attend about twice a year. i will confess something else, even though i dont wear it, i love looking at it. i can spend about an hour in sephora every time i am in a town that has one. it is fascinating to me, i guess since i know nothing about it. as i was preparing my morning mix i thought it looked cool so i snapped this picture. sometimes, if i am really alert and running early (read hardly ever) i will take the time to place the drop of foundation in the middle of the lotion, creating my very own facial fried egg. ok, so i can be a little strange sometimes...
personally, i find that foundation dries my pores...so i instead take a little pomade (I recommend sportin waves), mix with a little spit - and it will give my face an even sheen to last throughout the day!
huffmania made a trip to johnson farms pumpkin patch in belton last saturday with great success! for starters it was a gorgeous day of blue skies and mild temps. the patch had all kinds of great things for the huffsters, like a petting zoo, hay bale maze, swings, slides and eliots new all time favorite, a big bouncy pumpkin. i loaded some of the pictures to flickr but reached my free capacity for this month, so here are a few more of my favorites. ok, a ton of my favorites...
im off in a few minutes to serve my county and country for jury duty, or at least to find out if i am going to serve. im going to act really pregnant and hormonal and see what happens. anyway, just wanted to post quickly about my first attempts with fabric ink with my gocco. im not entirely happy with the look of my designs, the girl on the bike being too detailed and the bird maybe not enough detail? also im thinking that next time i should try on something that doesnt have any ribbing, like these little shirts of collettes do. i plan to try again soon, especially for this months tie one on theme. hmmm, cant get my picture to load, just look on flickr. ok, here i come jury.
hannah -- you're brave for even attempting something this permanent on a shirt for collette! i think they look great. thanks for all your help tonight...i'm looking forward to seeing what the gocco can do for habitat!
yesterday it was 84 in kansas city. yesterday was october 17th. this is not normal. we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and spend the evening outside doing what david hopes is the last of the yard work for a while. i thought that fit in nicely with the self documentary series. ok, so david is doing most of the yard work, but i took the pictures...
the weather here was wonderful...while it lasted. now we're drowning. hopefully it will clear up for the habitat opening. by the way, i like your hair and am glad i got to see it in person tonight since you were about 15 feet away in the photo.
you might be thinking i mean halloween, thanksgiving or even a jumpstart on christmas...nah. i have two kids, so i mean the cold and flu season. things are kind of in a lull here craftwise, so here are some pictures of the huffsters when their noses did not run and they did not have a seal bark cough and sad fever eyes.
hannah -- i'm catching up on some much-needed huffmania reading for the first time in weeks. i LOVE the new look. i've been meaning to ask you forever if you knew how to do something like this. it looks like you do. can you teach me some tricks? by the way, it looks like eliot makes a good sick patient if he can dance around with his slippers on his hands and a bucket on his head...i wish john has that same sense of humor when he was sick!
decisions, decisions. since i hate my clothes right now, shoes are that much more important. besides the fact that i am addicted to them. which leads to me standing in my closet wasting precious time i could be eating before heading to the office. check out more from this months theme at spt.
i noticed a pair of palladium freerubber(s) in the corner there (oh my husband would have fun with that). you're a step ahead of habitat, we'll be selling several different colors of those this fall. maybe we need to bring you on as our style consultant!
right now you are so jealous you dont live in kc. john and kristen had what i like to call a smashing pre-opening eye candy tantalizer this friday for october's first friday events. their store sits in a prime location in the crossroads district of downtown kansas city. the crossroads has become the happening place for galleries, trendy local stores, artists and young professionals who dont know what to do with their money. they will soon. spend it all at habitat my friends. all of it. you wont be sorry. a few more of my favorite pics of the night can be found here. for those of you not as fortunate to be able to shop at habitat in person, rest assured i will let you all know when the webpage is up and running.
thanks for posting these pictures. it looks like a good time was had by all. the models all look so professional! habitat is going to rock kansas city.
hannah, thanks for the pics! john and i were both too crazy that night to stop and take photos. it was a great night, and we're hoping the nov. first friday to be even better!
my attention is slowly turning towards halloween costumes. eliot has run through the gamut of ideas and finally settled on batman. for me not to exciting, but i think he is already old enough to start ignoring my suggestions. i think he got sick of me asking him if he didnt want to be a turtle instead. ok, so batman it is. which means of course that collette will be robin. any suggestions? im thinking that the majority of the costume details are going to be made out of felt and the main clothing parts will be color appropriate sweat pants or something. for eliot im thinking pointy black head piece/mask, yellow belt and required batman emblem for his shirt. for collette, yellow cape, red felt vest and black eye mask if she lets me. i will spare you my sketches, instead here is a great pic i swiped from an ebay auction, the way i remember batman...but i guess he has become more masculine since 1978 huh?
he is doing such cool things in africa. how awesome that he is following through on his dreams. but more awesome when we all get to hang out, maybe a little rummi, maybe a little porch sit, maybe just a little huffster watching... i can't wait for may.
there it is, the 20 week belly. and my first official self portrait. it is hard to believe that i am halfway done. i hope the next 20 go by as fast because i am starting to remember why i loathe being pregnant. david said he was going to open up the name game to the internet, but he is taking a break because all his faculties are currently diverted to a new script. so to recap, we are having another girl. our sons name is eliot david and our daughters name is collette olivia. we have been playing this with our friends for a few weeks now. some of my favorites: wren, elanor, penelope, and hazel. some of davids: jane, elise, emma and anna. comment at will, except you clark.
I love Wren, so pretty! Just to let you know, Emma is by far one of the most popular girl's names these days. Might be easier when calling her on the playground to use something different. Speaking as one of the 50 million girls named Katie in the mid 70's.
i can't believe you are halfway there! so crazy! it seems like yesterday when i inquired on the porch swing. i especially love hazel, wren, & jane. other names of note, macy, mable, elsie, leona. i guess i'm a sucker for grandma names.
i agree. emma is too popular but it somehow keeps making the list. anna isn't really on the list either, because it's too close to hannah. the one she missed is mariella, which is kind of long but i'm keeping it in the running because it goes well with huffman.
i do like: wren, elanor, hazel, jane, elise and emma.
i also like: ada, cate, chelsea, devon, eden, emily, erin, esther, fiona, gwen, gwyneth, haley, julia, lucy, maven, murren, nia, and tegan.
i love the naming process. i actually got to participate in an african baby naming ceremony whilst in ireland this spring (yes, african ceremony in ireland). quite a lovely experience.
The name that I've wanted to call my daughter (no kids yet) since I was 12: Kaya. Then I went and married a man with the last name King... Say it out loud if you don't get it. Hint: it's a sport. Needless to say, it's a beautiful name and you are welcome to it!
had a great time on saturday celebrating for clark and sarah's birthday! i labored all day saturday making sarahs birthday present, a cover for her hot water bottle. let me back up. i met sarah about two years ago and thought to myself, now there is an interesting person. over the last two years, that original thought has been affirmed and reaffirmed many times over, but now i dont think i could live without her. last winter sarah watched the kids for us one day a week, and that is when i noticed the hot water bottle, among other things, but i wont go into those... at first i thought she was crazy, i mean really, who carries a hot water bottle with them? who takes it to the movies? um, sarah does. but then, after all my scoffing, sarah did the best thing ever. she bought me my own! and i love it!!! i am here to tell you, no to jump onto my soap box, all you ladies, run, dont walk, to your nearest drug store and buy yourself a hot water bottle. you will spend a winter luxuriating in warm comfort. im telling you what, having a hot water bottle snuggled next to your feet under a blanket while watching tv in the winter is about the best thing ever. after an evening of tv, refill your kind friend and take it to bed with you! i mean it! you wont regret it. all that to say that sarah and i have been talking about some sort of fashionable cover for our hot water bottles for some time now. for her birthday i came up with what i am calling prototype no. 1. im not sure if i will stick with the original format, but i do like the results. its kind of like a dress shirt for your hwb. i found some great reproduction vintage calico at joanns and some vintage buttons at a garage sale. it is true, necessity IS the mother of invention. there are a couple more shots of the cover in action on flickr. the party was great fun. thank you john and kristen for offering up your home. and thank you to donna and beth for fufilling a pregnant womans cravings and bringing mozzarella sticks. mmm... david and i ate another dozen the next night. ssshhhh!!!!
ps. id like to give a shout out to brett, one of my most loyal readers. thanks for the heads up vikki!
i got your fine postcard note yesterday, hanging up above my ledge here at work. tanks a bumpch! btw, i think i know your friend sarah. i have noticed pics of her on your blog before and thought i recognized her, does she have any connections to chattanooga?
Thank you Hannah for the gift and the kind words. For some people it is some technological invention that changes the way they live...for me...it is the hot water bottle. I hate to be cold. The new cover is perfect and I second the call to go purchase one yourself. Would I dare say, Hannah, that perhaps even other household members find they also have a love for the hwb? I think so. I have no connection to Chatanooga for the record.

yeah. freaking love them. jumping robin and sharing batman. too good for words.
I can't take Robin! Can not take her!
Also, I have long suspected that the bat and King Richard were in cahoots. Here we have the evidence.
Finally, the comment about pleather could be taken several ways, and most of them make me feel dirty inside.
Batman and Robin -- too cute!!!!
Last year Henry and Alison went as Woody and Jesse. Two years before that? Woody and Jesse. Original stuff!
And my Allie has the same shoes as Collette! :)
Sounds (and looks!) as if a fun time was had by all! Great job on those costumes mom - don't be too hard on yourself!
those costumes are great. i didn't think you would be able to top last years cuteness. nice job hannah.
Their costumes came out amazing!! Absolutely the cutest Batman and Robin I have ever seen!
And I am in total agreement with #2, 3, and 5.
