eliot, you really are the best boy i know. six years old!? how did that even happen? you are loved by so many people, and i think that is a huge part of who you are. because you give so much love in return. i'm pretty sure that will never stop. thank you for being such a good big brother, even though those girls know where your buttons are and never hesitate to push them. keep drawing, keep laughing, keep jumping and keep dancing, ok? because we all love it. happy birthday!
I love your birthday messages... they always make me a little teary eyed! Also just wanted to say that I've been reading here for about a year and a half... and love it here. I don't comment often (ever?) but I love that you write so very genuinely. Oh and you're a kickass photographer. Love the Wiksten ones!
feet up, take a break. futab. its friday and i believe highly appropriate to begin futab as soon as possible. have a good weekend. i know i am. girls night tonight with all my lady friends. required attire? sweatpants. yes. menu? carbs. carbs. carbs. and brownie & ice cream. yes. entertainment? girly movies. dance mix cds. mojitos. uh, yes, yes and yes. you're jealous, i know it.
yeah. so my idea of slowing down was stopping all together and watching the whole first season of arrested development on dvd with david over the weekend. i think mama urchin & sarah yost hit the nail on the head. i did get a robot tshirt stenciled for a little friend that turned out great! i always think my stecils are so simple but then end up ironing on tiny little peices individually. but hey, i took my time and it is fantastic. now to get the other one done! eep! and today i took some time to enjoy the sun and pretend it was a whole hell of a lot warmer than it really is. 8 degrees is not an acceptable temperature in my book. ever.
ok, no weather talk. i do have a question for you, i am trying to come up with a small, easy valentines day craft that isnt too girly. im hosting the valentines party for eliot's kindergarten class and i didnt want the boys to be up to their ears in pink and red hearts. the majority of the time is going to be spent decorating their own cupcakes, and idea i stole from the chicken. thanks amy! i am amassing large collection of tube icings and sprinkles. anyway, ideas?
valentine party: how about a craft that they can make and then give as a gift to someone they love (mom or dad). shrinky-dink key chains? tissue paper flowers? (i'm trying to think of things that don't involve paint or glue for your sake).
What about these cute paper topiaries from Heather Bailey: http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/heather_bailey/2008/01/global-heart-wa.html
Too hard for them, maybe? You could cut out all the circles yourself and score them first I guess, but that would be a lot of work. Sorry, this was probably not at all helpful! ;)
ps Arrested Development ROCKS! That show is just too funny.
there's a good list of ideas for cards at familyfun.com (you could easily make the guppy one in blues and greens, and there's an alien one) and at marthasteart.com in the crafts for kids section, she has a cute heart card that folds into it's own envelope, and it looks super easy. Best of luck!
so my idea of slowing down was stopping all together
OMG I was trying to figure out what happened to me and you just completely nailed it. I've fallen and I can't get up. I'll just lay here on the floor and watch The Parent Trap for the 14th time and like it.
i think it might be cursed. this is the fifth attempt at making something with it. and really, lets be honest, i didnt make anything. i cut a big rectangle and attached it to a clear vase with some double stick tape. done. have i ever told you that i love double stick tape? love it. ever since i worked at the paper source and wrapped presents "professionally". awesome. but a word of advice, always get permant not that semi-perminant crap. it will just make you swear. and the thinner the better i say, i always get scotch 1/4 inch. i have rolls of it scattered around the house. it drives everyone crazy because if i see it in little hands i freak out and try to say as calmly as possible, "that is mommy's special tape, here use this {dumb single sided} tape". maybe i should put them away... i certainly did not mean to digress on tape. but back to the curse, i keep trying all these simple, "fast" projects and they just keep backfiring on me. i think because i barely even pause to use my brain, much less apply any sense of quality. and there my friends is the rub. quality. it always boils down to quality. because the better the quality, the better the item. it doesnt mean money, it means care. i need to take more care with my projects and slow down. way down. which is so hard. i know it. if i want any sort of sleep at night, i have to cram my crafting into the two hour window after 8:30. so things take more than one night to finish. ok. i can handle that. because i would rather like it than trash it. maybe i should clarify that this lecture is to me. thanks for listening.
hannah. i think we've all given ourselves this lecture at some point. i couldn't agree more, but there is certainly something to be said for instant (or quick) gratification. and i am certainly gratified by your quick project.
I have trouble with the multi-night thing too. Although right now it means I'm not starting anything but instead lying on the couch watching American Idol.
It's so hard for me to sustain focus from one day to the next. So if I don't get a project done in the window I have right now I probably won't finish.
This lecture was definitely meant for me, as well! I don't think I'm a terribly impatient person in general, but I tend to get impatient with projects, for some reason.
sweet molly of mommycoddle! thank you everyone for your lovely comments. so glad im not the only one with ideas droning through my head. actually i was pleased to see molly's name come out of the hat (well, nemo lunch box) because i met molly through a drawing she had on her blog. i love how things come full circle.
anyway, our weekend was full and unfull. you know? the big kids stayed the weekend with grandma, so we just had some quality arlo time. so nice. maybe i can convince my mom to rotate out one kid a weekend. hmmmm... i did have some time to stop by alicia's house and meet a whole bunch of kc blog ladies. hi ladies! sorry i didnt have more time to stay and that i came with a full belly because dang, that table of food looked good. and i finally finally picked up the serger from jenny. woot! now, what can i serge? huh? give me something, anything. maybe i can shorten all those tshirts i have but dont wear because they are so long on me! seems like a good test because who cares about tshirts?
ok, so obviously this post it turning into a bunch of randomness, but i did want to give a shout out to all my jayhawk lovers. david and i are going to the KU/OU game tomorrow night. did you know i like college basketball? its true. kind of shocking huh? i fully admit to being a fair weather fan. the secret bonus for tomorrow night? the drive to and from lawrence, an hour and a half of quality time conversation with david. you hear that david? get read for some heart to heart. i bet he is groaning right now.
it was 50 something this weekend. so we went to the park. where the children ran around like a pack of wild animals. i think they were a bit dazed by things like sun, and bare ground. i was anyway. of course today is back to winter. i was grumbling to david about the stupid schizophrenic weather here and he just gave it to me straight. he said "hannah, it has been that way your whole life here. thirty one years. get over it". dang. he is right.
on a more positive note, i really have an itch to sew. and if kc can get its act together and give me even some upper 20's at night, i might actually descend to the basement to do so. did you see melissa's curtains? crap. those are good. and something that i have on my list. thanks for stealing my thunder. things also on the list are: make arlo's shirt (got collette's done months ago...), shower curtain (cant be that bad right?), summer quilt for my bed (simple people, lets keep it simple) and about a billion other things that are buzzing around up there. and i realized the other day, i hit three years blogging in december. what???!! now that is crazy. anyway, i was thinking. i have two more potholders to finish and give out (i am a bad, bad friend) and to make me get off my bum and finish them, i thought, hey why not give a third one away? yeah. that will do nicely. so, please leave your name and preferably email in the comments and i will draw a name on saturday. ok? ok.
shower curtains are definitely not too hard! the one I made a few months ago was the first totally successful thing I have EVER sewed...no mistakes! so that should speak something to its difficulty.
wow to 3 years! pretty cool:) it has been weird weather here too with warm temps & thunderstorms (although i think that schizophrenic weather is normal here too, i am just not use to it having not grown up around here... :)
Those warmer days are blessings to help us cope with the cold Winter days! I am not leaving my e-address here because as a senior citizen I have a collection of way too many hot pads! :?) But, I am still waiting to see one of your knitted hats! I am actually trying to teach myself how to knit and made two scarves...not pleased with either one of them! I did just finish a crocheted afghan though and posted a picture of it on my blog!
oh pick me pick me! I have been checking your blog these past couple of months wondering how you do it all. you inspire me to do more! jashirley@yahoo.com
Happy three! Put my name in for a potholder, please.
As much as I get annoyed with the schizo weather, it certainly is nice to get a break from winter once in a while. I'm all for walks and park visits in January!
Delurking to say happy 3rd anniversary and please put my name in the hat for the potholder!! I always have at least 20 projects in my head that I'm gonna get to real soon. Ha! Anyway, if you're thinking about making a traditional sort of quilt, I highly recommend "Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts" by Mary Hickey. Cute patterns that can be used for any quilt, not just baby quilts and the instructions are GREAT! I just finished my very first quilt ever out of that book and it went together so easy and turned out great. You just have to increase the number of blocks to get a full size quilt of course.
Crazy weather indeed. The rain today feels downright springish. Happy three years. I'm happy to have found your little blog. And as for a shower curtain, one of my favorite projects was adding 14" of contrast fabric, some wide ricrac and grosgrain ribbon to the bottom of a white waffle weave premade one... easy and still very custom-made. Have fun.
3 years, wow! Congrats. I am new to your blog...lots to explore here. I've got tons of projects in my head too at all times. My body wants me to slow down though with 6 weeks left of my 2nd pregnancy and a house to find since we sold our place. My brain is fighting with my body. Homemade pot holders sound nice. PS. I got the Tova shirt from Jenny. So nice. i can't wait to wear it once I get this baby out. Cheers xx
i was completely overcome with the sewing urge tonight... sewing machine withdrawal hitting me all at once. and now there is a new pillow, and i'm feeling much better. happy 3 years of blogging!
we've had the weather thing going on here, too. one day the kids are in spring jackets and the next day i'm talking until i'm blue in the face about why they can't wear that jacket again today because it's the middle of january and it's winter and it's too cold even though yesterday felt like spring.
this year i will: have a 2 year old, a 4 year old, a 6 year old, celebrate 10 years of being married, make more things, buy less things, move more, idle less, try new things, go somewhere new, visit an old friend, make new friends, write letters, make cookies, take walks, fly a kite!, be happy, be sad, be ok with both, smile more, laugh even more, dance more, jump rope, cartwheel, read more, sleep better, stretch, drink water, take vitamins, join a csa, spruce up the house, shoot more film, frame and hang more art, start yoga again, basically just live. how about you?
Hey Hannah! I ran across your site through Amy Middaugh's site. It is beautiful!!! Your children are absolutely breathtaking. I was looking through your film pictures on flicker. My husband is a photographer and he took me out for my first film shoot on Saturday. It was fun and has peeked my interest. It was fun to see your pictures! I hope you all are doing grand! Amy Peach Nelson
great list, i should post it next to my desk. it's not easy being ready for a new year when it 10 degrees outside, but i guess that means i better knit more.
i love your blog. how did i end up here? jenny gordy, i think...
love your list. i definitely had a few of those on mine and will be adding a few more. i'm loving all the wonderful resolutions and hopeful looks forward out here right now. very uplifting and inspiring!
have a 5 year old have a 1 year old celebrate 10 years of marriage enjoy the last full year with a multiple of 30 in it have a parent entering a new decade complain less laugh more shake of stress embrace mess enjoy my curves and wrinkles wear jeans while I still can try to grow my hair wear gardening gloves more often remember to use my handcream enjoy the last year before my eldest goes to school love my girls love my man remember to always love my life and be grateful for it
The new year is so full of promise and opportunity and possibility. Starting now, now, now, I'll live. I'll pay attention, go deeper, listen, enjoy, love. I will.
happy belated new year hannah! this is my first comment here... so hello :) this is such a good new year's list. i love be happy/be sad/be okay with both. that is something i am still working on too.
Huffmania is such a happening place. Can't wait to check out your archives.
Me too re: 'smile more'...I have a 3 yr old and a 1.5 yr old and the 1.5 yr old was colicky for 12 mos, and well, you're a mom, you know, despite the deep love I was in a lot of pain and my smile took a back seat to her sister, 'survival'.

happy belated birthday, little E boy.
I remember the day you were born. Your dads eyes bugged out, and your momma was singing "HERCULEEZ, HURCULEEEEEZ!"
Uncle Jeronimo
