a little sweaty piece of heaven

so last night david, the kids and i took toby out to my parents house for dinner. which meant that we took the jeep and i sat in back between the two car seats. this is a pretty rare occasion for me, and really not unpleasant as one might imagine. on the way out to greenwood, eliot and i did some singing and dancing to keep collette from crying, eliot out performing me by far. she finds him more entertaining i guess. im taking a long time to get around to my point, so here it comes. by far, the best part of the whole evening was the ride back home. it was late, about thirty minutes past bedtime for the little huffs, and collette was out within two minutes of forward vehicular motion. maybe it was the timing, maybe it was the sleepiness, but for some reason, eliot decided to hold my hand the whole thirty minute drive home. it was heavenly. and warm, and slightly sticky, but oh so sweet. his cute, plump, soft little hand held onto my fingers, and i just leaned my head back, smiled, and enjoyed the short moment of affection my son decided to give me. i dont usually buy into the mushy, blah, blah, i love my kids, they are the best crap. im a pretty realistic parent. dont get me wrong, i do love my kids, but sometimes... back to the point, as i said, that thirty minutes last night was perfect. thank you eliot. i love you.

I just love this post. I've come back to read it more than once. I feel the same way when my son out of the blue puts his hand in mine and says, "I love you Mommy."

intimidation

so all that big talk about being crafty, and making all these things was apparently just that. talk. my poor, unused singer is sitting on the floor in the kitchen just waiting to be taken to the basement and assembled. i hate to admit this, but im scared! can i really make anything? will it look cool? i dont know!!! on the upside, because of this sewing machine phobia that i have developed, i went back to the old stand-by and finished the scarf i am making for sarah as a belated christmas present. no pointy metal involved in that one, just good, old, safe bamboo. i feel like such a chicken... i cant believe it.

merry holidays!!

our christmas eve and christmas day were great! eliot and collette both scored some clothes and cool toys. eliot by far came out on top this year. i believe the most exciting, and definitely the loudest gift received was a mini drum kit for eliot! that kid went to town on those things! there may be a rock star in the making. my wonderful, romantic husband surprised me with a date night and over night stay at the raphael on the plaza, complete with dinner and shopping. he arranged for childcare, which i must say is the most exciting part. i love my kids, but i am looking forward to an evening away from home, and who can say what time i will wake up with out eliot or collette to drag me out of bed at seven in the morning. how luxurious!

i just put my finger on it

so i havent been feeling super christmas-y this season. all my grandiose ideas for knitted/felted gifts have been pushed to january. im sick of the old navy commercials of the idiots in pajamas in the bowling alley. who goes bowling in their pjs??? i dont know of anyone. last night as i was wrapping presents while watching the oprah rerun, i finally put my finger on it. it doesnt feel like christmas because peter hasnt come home! all you late-twenty somethings should know what im talking about. peter, from the folgers commercial. now thats a good christmas commercial. the loving son comes home from some unknown distant location, sneaks into the house ever so quietly so as not to wake anyone. he goes into the kitchen and starts up a pot of folgers to warm himself up and settle down. mom, snuggled in her bed upstairs smells the delicious aroma of the folgers brewing in the kitchen and is stirred to a wakeful state. she looks puzzled, who could be downstairs? she bravely creeps down to take a look and who is it??? her handsome son peter! what a loving and happy reunion with the rest of the family later in the morning.

i miss peter. those were the days when commercials really had feeling, not just a spear-your-brain with messages of mass consumption agenda. so i say bah humbug to those idiots at the bowling alley!

Did I miss the little Santa Claus riding the electric razor down the hill? I'm trying to watch less t.v. I did see the stubble faced guy pushing the jewelry with Santa in the cab that is another commercial that keeps companies from employing actors on an annual basis.

project status: complete!

so i am officially done with my christmas cards. they are mailed and even received in some cases. amen! i stayed up friday night until three am. whew. i wish i had a picture to post, that will be remedied soon when i buy this! i can just imagine all the cool projects i can keep track of, oh and pictures of the little huffsters.

so last night we had dinner with the eddys and toby. some yummy chili. to top it off, kerry and i got to do some fun stamping. i cant say much about that now, because it involved christmas gifts. at one course in the evening the anti-panty came up (if you have no idea what that is, you can find a link to it in the last post), which was of great amusement to clark. maybe pick up a pack for kerry?? anyway, it got me to thinking, i am going to try to post daily a link to some little bit of silliness on the internet. we all can use a little stress relief or tidbit for the water cooler, right? so how about eggs for starters? its a nice bit of cute that has nothing to do with snowmen or reindeer or anything else christmas-y. let me know what you think.

just focus already!

so attempt number three on the christmas card design is a bust! i just need to focus and commit. i promise that tomorrow will be last paper purchase and that i will have all my cards completed by this weekend!!! oh yeah, i forgot, i have to work all weekend and a wedding on top of that. a promise is a promise. so maybe in the mail tuesday? no... all together no later than sunday. so instead of printing my cards tonight, i ended up at target looking at fishnet stockings, which according to hanes are "on trend". how strange. it says it right on the front of the package. i tried to find it on target.com but it wasnt there. instead i found this! how funny is that? i should probably go to bed. i have to pick up my present for the gift exchange at work. so hilarious... i hope it doesnt offend anyone. and i still have to buy the ingredients and make my dessert contribution. grrr...

projects galore

i did my first mini knitting lesson tonight with kerry and vickie. it was fun. hopefully after christmas, when everyone has more time, we will get together again for another go at it. and kerry gave me a great idea tonight too, button christmas tree! i know it sounds dorky, but it looked great. let me try to describe it. she covered a foam floral cone with random white buttons and toped it with a star. if and when (when hopefully being the operative word) we get a digital camera, i promise to post a picture. hopefully after christmas i will be able to work on getting this blog whipped into shape too. i would like to start a projects gallery. so that maybe someday someone out there in webworld can steal one of my ideas for a change. hopefully that will make up for all the things i have lovingly borrowed from others more creative than myself. hopefully. im thinking that if i do get a chance to teach my friend kristen how to knit we can do some sort of exchange and she can teach me how to develop film in her very snazy darkroom. everyone wins!!

sew easy

even thought i have been talking about knitting and card making so much for the last few posts, i am really excited to get a sewing machine for christmas. i plan on getting the bargain basement model singer at target or walmart. i certainly dont need anything computerized or fancy. and my first project will be (drum roll please...) a super-hero cape for eliot!! he has been wearing the kitchen towel lately to do his flying around the house. i thought it was about time for him to have a proper cape, with a big E on the back! although i have been visualizing a solid color fabric for the outside of the cape, i think i will line it with some cool fabric from here.

ka-nitting

so i got some yarn today! i am excited to get some projects started. i really have been lazy with the needles these past few weeks. i had dinner with my friend beth dixon to pick her brain on how to make a felted purse. i was all geared up to make purses for my mom and sister for christmas. well, being two weeks away, i have realized that instead, they will both get pleasant surprises sometime in the spring. and i keep telling myself its more fun that way! i am also very excited because a few of my girlfriends have expressed interest in learning to knit, which would be awesome! and im talking about you kristen and kerry!!! it is now on the internet and that makes it official in some capacity!

Hey, Those are sure two cute kids. They look to me to be the children of a very creative mother. I wish that I could make a blog and post links and everything but I am shy and have self-esteem issues and I don't have anything to say to the world except that things would be different if I were running it. I'm just kind of an observer living vicariously on other people's experiences. You are a happy parent, working hard to support your kids. I guess that life is pretty much the same in Kansas City as it is everywhere. Keep up the good work. robert c.

creativity blahs

i like to think of myself as a creative person. on good days. yesterday and today have been bad days. last night after getting home from work at the paper source, i was armed with a bag full of gorgeous paper and envelopes to make my christmas cards with. i hauled out my tub of stamps and pads and other card making do-dads, and my trusty think pad. its this great big pad of paper that i liberated from my other job that i use to stamp and sort and place ideas before i put one single drop of ink on my nice papers. its great, i love it. only last night after i had covered two whole pages (we are talking big pages here, like 11x17) with different stamped combos of ideas for my card, i found that the original idea brewing in my head these past few weeks sucked. i hated it! it looked awful. so i dug out another stamp that i had not planned on using and now i have a whole new idea that is somewhat satisfying. we shall see. it does require that i return some of the paper i bought in exchange for a different color. not too bad i guess. i think last nights experience had me down in the dumps. but tonight i made the mistake of checking out some of my favorite creative blogs before i started in on my cards again. what a waste. it is now an hour and a half later and i haven't even touched my cards, and i am feeling even less creative than yesterday. who are these people? do they take creative pills at night before they go to bed?? i say i like to knit, i say i like to make cards, but i really don't do much of either one. i wish i did, i wish i was better, or just a touch more creative. i know i am totally whining about this junk. and im only doing it to make myself feel better. and that isnt even working very well either. phooey.

baby steps

so here i go. my first step into the world of blogging. my friend sarah is going to hate me. she even hates the word blog. i keep telling her it's a great way to get ideas. i figure i can use this blog to, at the very least, post pictures of my children so that my parents, in-laws and other interested family members don't get angry with me because i don't send pictures. i hope anyway. i also seem to have hit a point of new found creativeness in my life, and might as well take care of that while i am at it. who knows. i guess we will see.

okay-
wow,
so i just finished your ENTIRE BLOG... i've read bits and pieces over the years, and then there was that time that i banned myself from blogs... actually that still stands bar a few, and well...
hannah, i'm so glad you started this, and then picked up a camera, and then a film one...
you are awesome.
so awesome that i wish i lived in kansas so i could sit on your front porch, nibble your collette's toes, or smell the back of arlo's neck (oh boy i'll bet that smells good!). i could play frisbee with eliot and soak up some sunshine with lemonade and cookies, and you.
thanks hannah. a billion times over.
