random

finally
i have a bunch of different projects going, but i didn't want you to have to stare at arlo's dress for the next few weeks. i stenciled a tshirt for my brother but i can't seem to get him to come over during the day to take a picture. doesn't he realize how important this is!!?? i need documentation! anyway, moving on. i have a bunch of random questions that i thought i would solicit general imput for. because, i pretty much always have a bunch of random questions bumping around in my head. here it goes:
1. what sort of face soap do you use? i am feeling bored with mine.
2. what sort of body lotion do you use? same reason.
3. any good new music bouncing around out there?
4. what is your favorite bra? should i really dump a bunch of money into a good one? i know, i am pretty sure you will all say yes to this, but man. it stinks to spend the money. my vs bra just gave out, and i picked up one on sale from gap that sucks.
i could go on and on with this list, but really this is already getting boring. instead, did you see melissa's quilt? dang.

*thank you so much jennifer for reminding me about vampire weekend. i saw them on snl a few weeks ago and LOVED them. the song in the second video is just giving me fits right now. bought the album on itunes last night. i could squeeze their little stick thin bodies, the cd is so good. also, finally got david to burn a copy of back to black/amy winehouse for me to have at work. loving that too, but not new. AND i poked around the bra section at target today but didn't have too much time. not loving anything, but found a few maybes for a quick $10 fix. i will spend some more time on this and let you know what i find out. and all the face wash and lotion suggestions are good too. i could spend hours in those isles. you people are so smart!

1. face soap: Paula's choice. Good solid face wash.
2. body lotion: I don't use it but my favorite cream if I were to use it and on the two times a year I do is Soma silk massage cream. Awesome.
3. don't know.
4. See number 3 because I still wear a nursing bra. Check Target though for options.

Face Soap: Kiss my Face Obsessively Organic - Start Up. It's the only thing that my fussy skin will agree with! It's kind of a light, fresh gel, has all sorts of natural stuff in it, and isn't harsh at all. It's not the cheapest stuff ever, and I have to go to Whole Foods or the co-op to get it, but it gets my vote for sure :)

1. Face Soap: Aubrey Organics for Oily Skin (reminds of Noxema but my face doesn't get dry and they have other skin options as well)

2. Body Lotion: Aveeno Daily (I'm looking for a new one too)

3. I recently downloaded Mark Ronson's album "Version" ...he has produced covers of songs and gave them a jazz/motown kind of feel. If you like Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen they sing on the album.

4. I second the Target suggestion...I picked up a lightly padded seamless bra and a nice lacy one recently and really like them. They are as well made as some of the ones I used to get at Victoria's Secret only much, much less $$.

1. face soap: neutrogena oil-free acne wash cream cleanser...if you don't break out..this will likely not be a fun one to try. if you do break out, i'm not exactly claiming this is working for me but i'm powering through the bottle.
2. i'm enjoying J.R. Watkins shea butter body cream in lavender.
3. I have horrible taste in music. But if you haven't tried it, wfmu streams live online (wfmu.org) plus they have all their shows archived online. it's a lot of fun.
4. target does sound like a good idea for cheaper bras--sorry I no original suggestions here.

1. Neutrogena Foaming Face Wash. Love it.
2. Sort of what ever is around... but I find by using Oil of Olay soap (the pink bars) I don't need as much lotion!
3. I am currently obsessed with Yeasayer - listen to their song 2080. Also Bon Iver and Jose Gonzales. Lots of nice guys with guitars.
4. I've been buying Calvin Klein bras for a long time and I'm always happy. They are a little pricier but really nice and often Macy's will have a sale once or twice a year.
Good questions! :)

1. purity by philosophy. seriously. saved my face.

2. lacticare. you can only get it at pharmacies and it's HARD CORE lotion. as in, it keeps my psorisis at bay and my husband claims it burns his skin.

3. coconut records. period. it's an obsession.

4. ::looking down:: girl, i have to go visit an old lady in independence to custom fit bras from me. i'm of no use in that department, my apologies. although, she does fit every size and shape so if you're REALLY interested i suppose i can share that information.

1. some clinique face soap, not sure what it's called
2. we LOVE the borage based lotions by Shikai. It has worked wonders on Tristan's super sensitive skin. We get it at Whole Foods.
3. my husband recently found Vampire Weekend, no judgement from me on them yet.
4. Totally spend the money on a decent bra. If you can find one, go to a lingerie store, not VS.

1. The translucent Neutrogena bar, and Sea Breeze to follow up. Love that tingle.
2. Big old tub of Aquaphor for the seriously dry spots, Origin's Ginger Souffle for the olfactory stimulation.
3. A couple Clap Your Hands Say Yeah songs have me feeling pretty peppy recently.
4. Ugly but supportive Maidenform all the way. Spend money on something to keep your ladies comfy.
Fun post, Lady!

1. collective wellbeing honey buff. have you heard about washing your face with honey? this is like that, but in a tube and more expensive.

2. shikai borage dry skin therapy

3. bon iver! steve malkmus!, new pornographers!, grizzly bear!, panda bear!, band or horses!, horse feathers! (all the bears and horses, really). um...i will hook you up.

4. i hear that going and having a proper fitting is totally worth it. i have not done this.

1: Angels of Bare Skin from Lush!!! I have "T-zone" skin (whatever that means!) and I use this stuff every night. It's not drying and I feel like it gets rid of all the day's ickiness. My skin feels more "balanced".

2: Aquaphor and/or St. Ives w/collagen & elastin. Although, I am also on the hunt for a good lotion with nice smell.

3: I'm not listening to anything super right now, but I can send you my husband's new cd he just recorded! He describes it as "Eclectic, experimental, jazz-influenced compositions that push the boundaries of conventional sonic organization." It's fun!

4: From one nursing momma to another, go to a nice bra shoppe where you can be fitted correctly. Pricey, but you won't regret it!

1. I am so a fan of clinique. I used to use face soap for two weeks and then get bored. plus my skin sucks. now I have used clinique without stopping for almost four years. I like that they explain how things work.it's the only stuff that makes my face feel like skin, not face. make sense? and, several times I have gone in to buy some other thing they have and they've said "you don't need that." maybe it's a marketing ploy but it convinces me that they're quality.
4. I thought I knew what size I wore, then when I was buying some at dillards the lady got mad at me and said "there is NO WAY you wear that size." she was right and I was SO off. everything she brought me fit. my favorites are all from calvin klein. they fit really well. I hate spending money on bras. they should be like four dollars max. but it's kind of like face soap, now that I have found something that works I'll spend money on one instead of buying fifteen at target that suck.

1. Just started using Bare Escentuals Mineral Face Wash - an organic, light, non drying but deep cleansing wash that somehow exfoliates as well. In two weeks my pores are smaller and I have not needed my daily scrub.
2. A Midsummer Night's Cream from Trader Joe's - non scented to not conflict with a dash of perfume.
3. Over the Rhine and Milosh for writing, The Killers for running.
4. Marshalls, Ross and TJ Maxx deeply discounted Calvin Klein, Lily of France, Oscar de la Renta etc., I try 'em all on, find one I love then buy three for less than $10 each.

Hey Hannah,
I have been using samples of face wash from Nordstoms for the last couple weeks, they last a long time and that way you know what you like.

Oh, I found great quaility bra's for $23 or $25 at American Eagle Body store in the mall. I told myself next time I buy a bra I am going back there. VS is so stinking expensive. I am speaking from someone who does not have much to cover up so it makes no sense for me to spend that much money on these little tots.

1) Mostly Water... and a bit of Aveeno bar soap.

2) St. Ives Swiss Vanilla. This is the super cheap stuff... but I LOVE the smell and it's light and not sticky.

3) She&Him (M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel) The new album just came out yesterday and it's awesome.

4) I want to hear what you end up with 'cause I need help here too.

(Whoops! Sorry. That was me above - "mollyandbrandon." I was signed in to the wrong account.)

1. Jurlique's Soothing Cleansing Lotion. Cheap it ain't, but it's worth it. I've been using Jurlique products for a few years now, and they are *perfect* for me. I tend to be a little on the oily-skin side, and I have a classic redhead's complexion - prone to redness, rosacea - and Jurlique keeps things totally under control. I am forever indebted to those guys.
2. Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion. I'm not a big lotion connoisseur, but it works nicely for me.
4. The past couple of times I've bought bras (like, uh, maybe 3 years ago?), I've gone to a lingerie store and wound up with Calvin Klein. I really like them, and they seem to last well. I think they're especially good for those of us with small- to medium-size breasts.

On the bra debate, it's totally worth spending a bit more in a fancy store but getting fitted properly. I finally summoned the nerve to go to one, and they measured me just by looking - I swear, it was very spooky. But it turns out I was wearing totally the wrong size, and now my rack looks properly pert instead of droopy. I dropped some money on a weird beige German bra in the fancy story, then got a cheapo one elsewhere so that I don't have to be skanky and wear the same one all the time - I bet it works out to the same cost as a couple of mid-range bras.

1. whatever you use.
2. the half-bottles of lotion you discard for something new (same for shampoo but at an accelerated rate)
3. vampire weekend's "vampire weekend." we just bought it together yesterday. it's quirky. do you like it? we haven't discussed it since then.
4. i don't wear a bra, but i wash them a lot. so if you get a new one that requires special care be sure to let me know, so i don't destroy your brand new, well-informed undergarment purchase.

1. Aveda Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser in the morning, and Aveda All Sensitive Cleanser at night (though this doesn't get makeup off well, so you need something separate for that)
2. Kiss My Face Olive and Aloe: it took me about five bottles of other stuff to find a lotion that didn't irritate my skin
3. I don't know -- I need some new stuff, too.
4. I don't do VS anymore -- they are overpriced and not very well made. My favorite one was made by DKNY. I think I got it at Nordstrom. I can't wait to go bra shopping and get rid of these stupid nursing bras. Soon, soon.

I use Biore face soap. Actually everything for my face is Biore. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin, and of everything I have tried this is the only brand that does not make my face bright red and cause horrible break outs. I use the ice cleanser.

I don't have a great body lotion. I have a big thing of vaseline intensive care, but it doesn't work like I'd like it too.

Hmm. New music. I work from home so I don't buy too much as I can always have pandora or something on in the background. I think the last thing I bought was Feist.

Bras. Well I am an odd size (natural 32 DD) so I kind of have to shop at Fredericks. BUT when I could shop at VS, I would find the line that I liked (I was partial to Pink) and would get great deals online when they would switch prints/colors. You just have to not mind unpopular colors or prints.

1. face soap: Love Clinique liquid facial soap in mild...buy 2 bottles at a time...one for the shower and one for the medicine cabinet. I have used the whole 3 step system for like 12 years now and I love it.
2. body lotion: Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Fresh. Light scent never interferes with all of the other products/perfume you may use plus after working in a dry, dry hospital it is the only thing I have found that is afordable and works.
3. music: i like weird music you probably wouldn't like.
4. bras: get a good fitting from one of the major dept store ladies (like macys) then go to marshalls or tjmaxx and find one you like for less $$$ :)

4. still in nursing bras. Am in the market for new stuff too.

face soap- take a trip out to whole foods for aubrey organics products. all natural ingredients, baby! (or you can buy online.) how could your face disagree with that? mine loves it, and it's way cheaper and better than the expensive department store crap i used to buy.

body lotion- i borrowed mindy's zum body lotion the other day and really want to buy some. you can get it at whole foods too. have you ever smelled zum soaps? oh my, they smell real good. does all this make me sound like a hippie?

music- i never have new music anymore, i'm rediscovering my old favorites. i need to burn you a copy of jens lekman. speaking of vampyre weekend, a couple of months ago i said to joe, "oh i found this new band i like but you'll probably hate them." he goes, "is it vampyre weekend?" i was like "how did you know!!!!???" his brother had the chance to sign them to domino, but he passed them up because he HATES their music. (stupid, if you ask me, because they could have made him some money.) personally, i think it's just the whole harvard prep school guy image that joe and kris are hating, not the music itself. anyways, i thought it was funny.

bras- i am OBSESSED with Elle Macpherson's collection of bras (i know that sounds stupid, but they are insanely awesome.) i bought a set at birdies for my honeymoon, and have worn the bra practically every day since then for two years (with frequent washings), and it still looks brand new. it's the prettiest, most comfortable, and most flattering bra i own. only problem is that they are super expensive, which is why i still only have one. it's a great investment though, since they last forever. if you get one, make sure you get one that's lined with cotton, or it will not be comfortable. i know because i've tried on others.

phew, sorry this was so long! i guess i'm very opinionated when it comes to beauty.

3. Tom Brousseau, Jose Gonzalez, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, Jack DeJohnette and Foday Musa Suso (via Blair of Wisecraft)
4. Ack! I'm in the same boat, bra-wise. I'm down to two that I rotate. I like Natori. Nordstrom has always been really helpful in that department. I found out I was wearing the completely wrong size, which explained a lot.

there might not be anymore room in your medicine cabinet but i've been using burt's bees products for several years. face and body both. i don't like anything with chemicals in it and i use like 4 different types of moisturizer, because it feels so good. The carrot night cream is good in the evenings before you go to bed, you'll wake up with the softest face in the world. and the decemberists have been in my cd player for months, but have your heard of hood? it's mellow hiphop with a little anitcon mixed in. it's different a little sullen but bright enough for the upcoming spring weather you're hopefully gonna have soon.

what is it about these kinds of questions? can't not answer them, even if I didn't want to. extremely late to the scene and you are prolly already overloaded with information. can you take anymore? too bad. here I go:

1. something creamy and frothy by dove mixed with a bit of baking soda. I am a girl with dry, flaky skin.

2. 'lemon' by fresh. smells like lemons and sugar, exactly like the color yellow should smell. and I know how you feel about yellow. I buy one bottle a year and make it last. it's that good.

3. am currently liking: clap your hands say yeah, joanna newsom, yael naim, she&him (to name a few). and mos def has a new album coming out which has me all giddy and happy. um, I do believe I still owe you a mix. haven't forgotten about that. maybe this will be the year.

4. I'm on the hunt too. I was recently told to get myself to nordstrom's (lickety-split) for a proper fitting. everything I own is crap. and judging from the discussions I've participated in lately, yes-- we're going to have to spend a little bit of money to get a decent one.

2. body lotion: Eucerin is the only thing that works for me but that's because I have insanely dry skin. It's pretty amazing stuff though--within two days my skin went from totally dry and red to beautifully smooth.

3. music: belle and sebastian! they make me happy. and I just ordered a cd with songs from almadovar movies that I am really excited to get!

4. I LOVE my triumph bras but I am not sure you can get them in the states. they are quite pricey but I have had some of them for 7 (!!!) years and they are still in good shape.
