very cool
myra has thrown down a thrifting challenge for this weekend. it goes a little something like this, how many cool items can you get for 20$? hmmm... well today i had some free time to stop buy an estate sale. unfortunately for me, i never find those estate sales where the nice little old lady had a huge stash of fabric and notions. i dont know why, but i never do. fortunately for me, my friend sarah does and she buys me cool fabric. but, i digress. so at this particular sale, which was ho-hum, but i still managed to kick start my thrift challenge weekend. i bought five old photographs for one dollar. they are so cool! i love that i dont know anyone in the pictures, and im not sure where some of them are. they all say kodacolor print july '65 on the back. these two are in san francisco, im pretty sure.
that guy in the glasses squinting at the camera is the son i think. there were a few big, nicely framed pictures of him. im digging that lady with the kerchief over her hair.
this is where things get hazy. i have no idea where this is, joice st. anyone? is that sanfran? its a pretty sweet car though. anyone have eagle eyes and can make out the plate? i cant.
i really like this one quite a bit. the guy feeding the pigeons is the dad, i think. at first i thought this was in europe, but upon closer inspection, the billboards in the back are in english. so maybe london somewhere? maybe they are in d.c.?
this one is my absolute favorite. i love everything about this picture, and i cant explain why. look at that kid, and that white-blonde hair. i love that he is wearing a belt and slacks on vacation. he looks so relaxed. im not sure what i will do with these, maybe use them for cards. more than likely i will just keep them, put them on my fridge or inspiration board. i also found a pretty cool 8mm camera for david, but im not counting that in my thrifting total. so that means my current standings are: 1 item, $1. not too shabby...

Hawaii just isn't much of an antiquey thrift shoppy kind of place. But maybe I'll get lucky! Looks like your $20 is going to go a loooong way! :)
BTW I googled Joice Street and it looks like it is indeed in San Fran.
Another hint about the Joice st. pic is the suspension bridge and the sign about preventing runaways. We have a suspension bridge in Vancouver BC, but that is not vancouver... I love the car against the buildings.
And, just cause I felt like it, I looked up Hotel Stewart which is visible in the pic with the pigeons. It was in san fran as well and is now (I think)the Handlery Hotel, and this is Union square. Here is a link with a cool panorama and you can get a *very* close match the your pic;

how awesome, its like a little dective game. maybe i will start buying random pictures a make a webpage devoted to identifying the locations. so are we to assume that the boats are in sanfran too? although i get the feeling that that kid is the son at a younger age. not sure why... what a mystery!
Hi Hannah, I found you via Mariko's site. I love old photos of San Francisco. The bridge in the background of the Joice St. pic is the Bay Bridge. And I'm sure the kid is at Fisherman's Wharf, too. The mountains in the background are Angel Island and Tiburon in Marin County.
I'm pretty jealous that you have the original prints -- thanks for sharing! My special connection to them is that I'm writing this from a building in one of the pictures: The Sir Francis Drake Hotel, which is the tall building in the distance of the first picture. The picture was taken at the base of Powell Street at Market -- you can see the cable car turntable in the foreground.
Also, I visited San Francisco for the first time the month before these pictures were developed. I'm sure the little kid at Fisherman's Wharf isn't me, though.
The picture of the plaza with the tall column is, as Marielle says, Union Square, which has been totally remodeled since this picture was taken. The Dewey Column is still there, though. The building in the background is The St. Francis Hotel, which got a much taller addition behind it in the early '70s. All the airline offices are gone now, and the billboards currently feature ads for stuff like Macy's and iPods.
Damn, Union Square looked so much better in those days. Now it looks like a huge uncomfortable department store lobby.
i must be meant to visit sf. out of a stack of 20 or so picture of from all over, i pick the five that are sf and i didnt even know it! thanks everyone for all the input on the locales. it makes me sad that union square doesnt look like that anymore. no longer european looking eh?
Yes, those are all San Francisco. I was just saying at "one man safari" that I used to live a few blocks up from Joice St. (or alley, really), and I loved to walk along it from Chinatown toward Union Sq.. You can walk it from I think Washington or Clay (Joice is just E. of Powell St.) over Nob Hill down to Pine St. (or maybe Bush) where it ends and you pick up Dashiell Hammett Alley for one block more. Try it sometime! The block between Powell and Pine has a very nice stairway. --tinstars@sbcglobal.net
