holidays, merry christmas! i hope everyone can find some time to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. oh and eat lots of cookies. if thats your thing. it is mine. i was thinking last night (my contemplative time in the bathroom brushing my teeth of course) about this year. it has been a year of ups and downs for us. or maybe i should just say, a year of life. if i let myself, i have a tendency to freak out about the future. how will we ever manage this? or find the time for that? or pay for anything?? my cure for this freak out? a little bit of reflection. i know, i know, it sounds so very cheesy, but try it. it works, i promise. because inevitably there is something you thought you could never ever handle/manage/afford and if you take five minutes to look back six months, a year, two years you will be amazed at how much you did handle/manage/afford. we people have a knack for making it through a difficult situation and then forgetting how worried we were about it in the first place. or again, i should say, i do. so, get your cookies out, turn off the lights (but leave on the tree lights or candles!) find that sappy movie you love to watch, get cozy (hot water bottle & down throw!) and relax. be happy. just that easy.
I did just that! I watched "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and Gary watched it with me! Next, I want to watch the video David fixed up for us with our family Christmas 1987 and other family stuff!
You're so right - why is it so much easier to focus on the hassles? We'll try harder with the last night of the old year - it's hit 42C here in Melbourne, Australia and all four of us are feeling a little stir crazy, but as soon as the sun goes down hopefully it will be cool enough to chase away the demons of 2007 and welcome in all that is good in our lives - remember to hold tight onto it - in 2008.
kansas city. what are you doing to me? yes, the ice is beautiful and i love it. love it from the comfort of my living room. i hate it as i creep to work in the morning and then creep back later. and i pretty much hate cold weather in general. nothing new there of course. but i dont want to be a hater. so i will take those two bags of apples i have waiting and make them into the delicious butter. and while that is bubbling away for hours, i will take my hot chocolate and attack that stack of eight inch squares of fabric and batting and get those gifts under my belt. this of course after i watch the incredibles while snuggling on a love seat built for two, with three small ones, one big one and two down throws. im not sure how, but believe me, the math all works out there. stay warm and safe if you live in an iceland too. and even if you dont.
ah, great photo. and yes, i was so excited for a snow day...only to find out that it was 1 degree above freezing, thus making the roads perfectly fine. stupid 33 degrees.
you stay warm and safe too - we saw footage of the ice on the news here last night and I showed matthew your photos as we'd never seen anything like it before!
I love the cold, but here in California there is no such thing. Not in Southern California at least. I would love to have one of the days you just described. It sounds lovely.
so i made apple butter for the first time in my life. um. it is awesome. which is good, because i have memories of not really liking apple butter, but i cant get enough of this stuff. i decided it would be a good idea to do a test run before actually making some for gifts. i enlisted a few testers and i think i am getting a thumbs up from everyone. i see more of this in my future. which is a good thing because it makes the whole house smell good. the recipe comes from a link from orangette. that molly. i mean come on. did you know she is writing a book?? yes, save your pennies now.
oh hannah, that looks devine! you are such an awesome wife/mom. i'll bet your family loved it. that's such a super gift idea! i think i'm going to make baked goods for gifts this year because i don't have time for more sewing. i'm thinking lena's pumkin cranberry bread. food type gifts are seriously the best, aren't they?
I must comment on the beautiful paper towel design your toast with apple butter sits on! The artist, Delanie Jenkins, in Pittsburgh, has elevated the basic towel to a piece of quiet, illuminating beauty.
Hm. am I doing this justice? www.delaniejenkins.com her site will do her justice. Yes, I'm her friend, but your apple butter and the dress and your funny comment on All Buttoned Up led me to want to introduce you to delanie and The Paper Towel.
I adore coverlets, and, if you look at them, you will notice the paper towels are inspired by coverlet designs. All very cool.
